Think my wishbones are gone again
« on: 28 March 2007, 10:50:24 »

Stupid amounts of noise coming from both sides this morning - all I can assume is that where I didn't have a torque wrench I just guessed, couple that with not tightening the bolts on the ground (the guide doesn't state this I don't think) and I suppose you end up with knackered bushes again...

Bit crap really, supposed to be having full alignment done on Sat..

I'm going to have to buy a torque wrench that goes much higher than my current one, and new wishbones.

Question: tightening them on the floor - can I do it on my ramps, I do not see how you are supposed to tighten them without a pit, or a car lift otherwise!

Cheers,

Chris.

- Front and Rear Wishbone Bush
- Steering Knuckle to Suspension Strut
- Pinch Pin Bolt on Steering Knucle

Cheers in advance..

Not sure this is any help but did you do you anti roll bars (droplinks) could it be these is it a kind of rattling noise or does it sound more wishbone related

How long ago did you do the wishbones?

I think someone on here suggested driving it onto a high curb obviously up a gentle slope, then torqueing one side then turning the car round to do the other this way you can get underneath, but if you have ramps should be even easier to do, I think its ok to put it on ramps to do the torqueing.

Unfortunately i couldn't tell you what torque setting to use but i'm sure someone on here will have them.

Hi Nixoro,

Yeah, I did the droplinks at the same time, which reminds me - I need the torque settings for those too if poss...

Cheers,

Chris.

Unfortunately i dont have my haynes in front of me, but I shall have a look during my lunch and post up asap, although someone may already post the detail you need by then.

I haven't actually done a wishbone change as they were done at a garage last time but have done the droplinks a couple of times, how did you find the wishbone swap?

I tightened mine before connecting the ball joint, the wishbone was horizontal.  Then I had them loosen and retighten them when doing the tracking.  Didn't use a torque wrench, just a lot of grunts.

Yeah theo, thats what I did, and 2 weeks later it feels like I have steering seperate to the car, and lots of noise over bumps!

Some things I do up to a careful guestimate... but important things, like headbolts, brakes, suspension etc, need to be torqued :)

Suspension done up with a long torque wrench - used like a breaker bar.  ;)

Also, has anyone got the torque values for:

- Front and Rear Wishbone Bush
- Steering Knuckle to Suspension Strut
- Pinch Pin Bolt on Steering Knucle

Cheers in advance..
respectively:

120Nm / 89 lbf ft, then 30 degrees, then 15 degrees
90Nm / 66 lbf ft, then 45 degrees, then 15 degrees
100Nm / 74 lbf ft

... all from the book of lies  :y

Delicate use of a propane torch?

Do the torque, then turn the specified no of degrees.

you need an angle gauge for that but they all should be lock nuts on there anyway.
as for tightening when the car is on the deck this is correct mine is lowered so i know the problem of getting underneath, if you've got two jacks use one to support the car and the other underneath the lower ball joint. you can the jack the bottom arm to a flat level and simulate the car being on a level ground.please make sure the rear wheels are chocked even if the handbrake is on

After garage replaced my bones it started knocking over bumps.  Jack up the front wheel and try to move it a 9 & 3 o'clock position.  If it moves then the track rod ends could have excessive play in them causing your noise.

Previous threads have suggested that the car is supposed to have the wheels on the ground and 75kg (11stone) in each front seat if you want to do the job 100%

When I took torque settings to garage he just laughed and pointed at a 6ft pole that he'll use to tighten them up as far as he can.  Time will tell  ;)

He probably calls himself an engineer.

Did you tell him what to do with the 6 foot pole?
