3.2 Y32se timing belt
« on: 22 August 2021, 19:43:13 »

I have done a quick search and I can’t find enough info on the correct way to fit a timing belt to these.

I am a mechanic by trade, albeit it’s been 20 odd years since I lifted the tools in anger (by that I mean working on cars everyday), so I like to think I’m competent enough around the tools. However I’ve never done a timing belt on a V6 before and having read little tit bits available here I am seeing that the refitting of the belt and the setting up of the tensioner’s is “fun” with mention of 10deg BTDC etc….

Has anyone on here fitted one with success and is there a better guide available?

Visit the forum shop and spend a couple of quid on the DVD ;)

many a cam belt has been fitted by forum members but you do need a proper cam lock kit, using the marks on the cams & cover is only a best guess.

Thanks all, the forum shop doesn’t appear to be working? I tried a link for the DVD from the Maintenance Guide section and it didn’t open basically. Is there a new link as I assume it might be for the old site?

Buy a forum DVD by all means, but if you know your way around a set of spanners, you'll work it out without it.  But as said, you need a full locking kit to time it all up properly.

If you use the timing tools, you don't have to measure anything. If you don't use the tools, it will be a lot harder to actually assemble the belt and tensioners, and you will only get a roughly timed belt. My car was like this; the belt had clearly been fitted by the Tippex method, and had run without problems for four years and 30k miles. But it was a tooth out on all four cams, and ran smoother, drove better and fuel economy improved by 2-3mpg when timed correctly.

If you install the new belt with all three locking tools in place, and the adjusters in the middle of their travel and keep tweaking the adjustment using the timing gauge until it repeats after turning the engine through, it will be right. That's perhaps three adjustments and five minutes work.

It's not difficult, but you do need your mind the details head on :y

The question was 'The guide isn't clear, is there any other... Or words to that effect.

The dvd clarifies anything lost in translation and puts a couple of quid in the forum coffers. Which helps keep the lights on so that everyone can be a critic.

So, actually it wasn't bad advice as it answered the question being asked  :-X

If that's not good enough, you can always rewrite the guide.

Although the shop appears to be down. So there's that...

Alternative sources would include Haynes and Autodata.  ;)

The shop has been closed since February, hence the thread about it.

I’d be more than happy to pay someone for a copy of said DVD. I’m sure there must be someone in here who has a copy that they either no longer need or could spend a few moments copying to help out another member?

Haynes don’t cover the FL Omega although I haven’t searched on their website using the engine code. I also haven’t checked Autodata, that site had slipped my mind. Although at £50 a month it’s not really a viable option.

The engine is the same as the 2.5/3.0 with the exception of the lower tensioner not being adjustable.

If you don't use Autodata, what do you use at work?  ???

As for copying the dvd, that would be in breach of the copyright on it. The whole point is that by buying it from the shop you contribute to cost of the running of the Forum.

Obtaining it elsewhere, free or otherwise, goes against that principle.

Send TheBoy a PM about the DVD as he looks after the shop.
