not sure if environmentle discussions are allowed, admin, feel free to delete.  I don't want to start an argument which from memory, there used to be.....

but

Just watched The One Show from Glastonbury and the man from Greenpeace explained that used cooking oil and waste wood was powering the site........

thats ok then... ( but a load of swollocks )

The energy used to create the real snow wasnt being wasted in any way whatsoever, was it?, even if it was from a renewable source.

it really gets my goat ...

General Discussion Area / A hair dressers car
« on: 03 June 2013, 22:19:38 »
OK, what makes one?

My last car was a Mini Cooper S ( supercharged version ) but it was blue with a white roof and white wheels.  My work colleagues all decided it was definitely a hair dressers car.

My 2.0 supercharged SLK seems to have avoided similar criticism in the same group.

With a restricted budget ( having just lobbed out a not insignificant amount on the wife's car and bearing in fact I only do 14 miles per day ) is there a small, cheep to buy, potentially convertible, reasonably quick, reliable, comfortable vehicle that is not classed as a 'hair dressers car'?

The mini was quick, handled like a go-cart and sound fantastic when the supercharger was spinning yet is predominantly driven by women it would seem.

The Mercedes is a much more civilised car, still quick and cheep to buy and I much preferred its build and finish to a Z4.

Just interested.  I couldn't give a flying f**k either way, the MB is lovely, smooth, quick.  The Mini was raucous and uncomfortable and I'm getting old lol

Had rather a lot if cars since selling my last Omega.

We now have another Vauxhall

2.2 SE Nav 4x4 .  It was the wife who chose it, some of her School mum friends have them  ::).

I have got myself a little baby SLK

9 years old but very clean.

I joined the MB forum.  OMG .... :o

They are discussing wether they should buy branded or non branded fuel????

Made me think of this place.  Still see some familiar names.

Made me want to say hello...

Omega General Help / Central locking
« on: 24 October 2006, 09:44:30 »
My drivers door lock no longer operates with the key fob remote  :-/

It attempts to operate but looks as though it is stiff.  When locking, the rest of the doors / boot lock then unlock.  I think this is the control system detecting the drivers door has failed to lock.  It locks fine with the key in the door.

Is there some mechanism that can be cleaned and lubed or do I need a new central locking solenoid for the drivers side?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

OK, provisionally booked the Omega Owners Forum in for Thursday the 12th April.  This is during school hols for all you poor parents and should give everyone enough time to make plans.

IT IS NOT SET IN STONE and can be changed to a later date if required.

Children are welcome but I have asked that the tour is aimed at the adults as there will be more of them than children (unless you all say otherwise and want to paint power stations and go on a nature trail?)

The tour will include :-

  • Introduction / teas & biscuits in their training centre
  • A short video about Drax, what goes on at Drax etc etc etc
  • Some time in their exhibition room, again in their training centre
  • Then its on to their own coach ( :o never ceases to be amazed at Drax) for a tour round the site showing the cooling towers and materials handling amongst other things
  • Then its on to foot for a tour of the Mill Bay/bottom of the boilers, Turbine Hall and Control Room
  • Then back to the training centre for questions and more tea
For those real techies amongst you, I could take a small number round the inner workings of the control systems etc if anyone is not board out of their minds by that point.

There is no charge for any of this - they welcome the opportunity to educate!

There is nothing much in the village of Drax (apart from the largest coal fired power station in Europe).  The nearest town is Goole and it has to be said, its not a place I would head for a holiday but there is a good Indian restaraunt.

I normally stay at the Goole Premier Travel Inn which has a pub attached and serve food which would seem the easiest option as no one would have to drive.  If its easier (and I may be able to get a discount through work) I could block book the rooms if required.

The coast is about 45 miles away, York is 30miles, Doncaster is 20miles (cracking night out on a Thursday night by the way :y)

I will need a list of names and a copy of some photo ID (passport / driving licence) from all the adults to get you through the rather stringent security.

When we have a list of definates, I'll post my works address for you all to send your details to.

So, a list of definates please

Meetings, gatherings, parties etc / Trip Round Drax Power Station
« on: 25 January 2007, 20:33:47 »
Made some enquiries today and have been given the OK for a site visit for the OOF.

I'm not exactly sure what it would include, I'll make firmer arrangements when I know levels of interest, but they have agreed to provide an official tour guide for us if there are a reasonable amount of people.  If its just a few people (4 or 5) then they will let me give the tour.

An official tour would be free by the way :y

I usually stay in a Travel Inn in Goole which is a couple of miles away from Drax, £52 per night on a weekday, cheaper on a weekend.  Does have a pub attached though.

York 30 miles, East Coast 45 miles so a visit, a pub meal and a few drinks, and a run out the next day is a possibility.

So the question is, who’s interested?  Answers on a post card please...

General Discussion Area / Our security of electricity supply?
« on: 31 March 2011, 22:20:49 »
Just interested what people's thoughts are with regards to our electricity industry?

http://www.wwf.org.uk/news_feed.cfm?4795/Electric-car-key-to-carbon-cuts

How are we going to travel less?

Where lis the electricity going to be generated to charge all of these cars to keep them 'green'?

What are peoples thoughts regarding the UK nuclear industry?

General Discussion Area / Badge Snobbery
« on: 06 February 2011, 21:42:14 »
I have owned three Omegas, all of which were fantastic (the last was only a 2.0l GLS in Star Silver (the best color))

It seems such a shame that Vauxhall do not have a replacement for the Omega.

After a few years in the wilderness (Mondeo estate, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Rover 25), a decision had to be made.

I had my heart set on an XJ but wanted a newer one (too expensive).  BMW 5's are just too expensive (and have no heritage!), Looked at the Saab 95 but didn't like the back end.  Ended up with a 2003, E320 Avantgarde with most of the optional extras.

I do find it interesting that, even though its 7 years old (only done 54k though :)), people do look at the badge and seem to be oblivious to the fact that it only cost £9K, I could have bought a new Insignia for more???

Its also not been the ultimately reliable machine people expect.  Lots of electrical issues, heater control valves, batteries (there are two of them!) fly by wire break system recalls .....

It is still a nice car though.

Having said that, it is genuinely no better than than any of my three Omegas .....

Its been a long time since I last owned an Omega.  I parked next to a Star silver CDX today.  Looked rather nice I must say and I wondered if I had made the right choice?

I now own a 2003 E320 Avantgarde (petrol),

Plus side :-
53k miles, 6 Mercedes services, very very clean

Negative side :-
Built in the cost reduction days hence some electrical issues, break by wire electrical system and a dodgy radiator that can split and leak into transmission.

I am using an independent chap, Mercedes trained, to service and maintain.

So far, needed a new main battery (it has two, one main in the boot and one motorcycle battery in the engine compartment).  Error message 'non essential electrical consumers disabled'.  Battery voltage had dropped below 11.75V on the very cold mornings.

Heater control valve is sticking (common apparently), £25 part but 4 hours to fit.

Last night, car reported that left hand side rear number plate bulb had blown, which it had.  I have never owned a car with this level of on-board diagnostics!.

Now looking at getting a CAN bus interface kit.  Capabilities look rather interesting and a bit like a busman's holiday!

General Discussion Area / Renewable Electricity Generation
« on: 09 January 2011, 22:45:33 »
last night, an interesting piece from Paul Hudson on Look North.

During the coldest day in the recent cold snap (coldest on record for Yorkshire)

26,000 MW coal
23,000 MW gas

20 MW wind

(MW being Mega Watts or millions of watts)

We at Drax already are producing >500MW from renewable fuel.  24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no mater what the weather and yet we are still be bad guys???

Tree hugers and nut munchers, do some research!!!

Just watched Black Sky, Race For Space, fascinating.

Climate Change :-

"I put myself in the (Those who fear expansion of Government control) group, and do not hide the fact that I have a clear bias on [ Anthropogenic global warming (AGW)]. My bias is based on fear of Government expansion and the observation of AGW data presentation fraud - not based on financial or any other personal benefit. I merely have found that the closer you look at the data and alarmists’ presentations, the more fraud you find and the less you think there is an AGW problem... For decades, as a professional experimental test engineer, I have analyzed experimental data and watched others massage and present data. I became a cynic; My conclusion – “if someone is aggressively selling a technical product whose merits are dependent on complex experimental data, he is likely lying”. That is true whether the product is an airplane or a Carbon Credit."

If you look at my post count history, you will see I am a rather infrequent poster and really have no desire to increase it (admins please reset to zero after this post)

Anyway, off to uk-mkivs.net to try to sift though the crap to diagnose my MAF sensor fault.
