Omega General Help / Re: Intermittently noisy heater fan
« on: 12 February 2017, 12:26:37 »
Just undo the three screws on the cover and the motor will pull away. The rear bush is right there. The front is accessible from the armature side. I did not pull the fan off as it is more than likely to break. Squirty lube with a nozzle tube is best. I used wd40 then motorcycle chain lube.....as I tend to use that on most things!

I then stuck it straight across a battery to make sure it was fine as now you are aware they are not fun to get out and in.   :'(

Thanks to all for the advice. It behaves as if the bearings are worn, always noisy on start up, often quite at full speed. I have stripped it down to the cable tray, and can see all the bolts. Al the speeds work, so I presume the hedgehog resistors are OK. I have found a spare in my spares heap off a 2.5 I scrapped 4 years ago. I hope to install it over the weekend.

Don't forget to lube it first as otherwise you are likely to be back to the same situation sooner or later, they only run on what looks to be oilite bushes!

Mine did that for a while then stopped altogether.

As per prev post, getting the fan out is rather fiddly but doable.

Took mine apart once out and lubed the bushes, now nice and quiet and that was done some time ago.

Top screw was done with spanner on a torx bit if I remember.

Seeing as the car is IRS then I fail to see how the diff mount would add to any rigidity in the back end. My first look (especially if the car was running low for any length of time would be the subframe mounts or the trailing arm bushes, both add (or not) locational strength to the rear end.

Underseat connectors are one of the most common SRS failures. Always check there first........But first disconnect the battery, wait fifteen mins (just to be sure) for the caps to discharge and visually disconnect and check the wiring/connectors. Do NOT go poking around with a multimeter in the SRS wiring/components.

Once all plugged back in then reconnect battery and see what occurs.

Fitted them and they work perfectly, didn't realise just how bad they were getting.

Like new and all for less than 3 quid.  :y

Found the genuine switches the manufacturer used, seems they are used in a variety of manufactures fobs.

The originals are 13yrs old so at least I know the replacements should last at least half of that.

KSR251GLFS in case any body needs them, RS Components with free delivery.

Happy days.

Soldering not a problem, still got the means to do that, eyes more of an issue nowadays but got some x3 glasses (China £1.99) I use for intricate stuff, they are great unless the work piece is more than about a foot away.........my eyes aren't that bad.....yet!

Def looks like that's the way to go and found some UK suppliers so all good so far.

Didn't think of looking for a repair kit of fleabay. Cheers for that.   :y

Have found the required parts though some searching but a "kit" might be the easier way to go. Checked the battery and it and the connections are fine, its mainly the lock button that is getting intermittent but might as well change them all once its apart.

Has anybody used one of these kits?

Does anybody still sell the fob switches found on the three button fob?

If not does anybody know if they are available from RS etc?

Mine are starting to play up.

Cheers

Did mine some time back, not to bad to do in the real scheme of things. Do watch out though as the plastic T piece connectors break real easy. Changed mine for generic ones and they have been fine. Most proper car parts places (auto factors etc) sell them cheap enough should you need them, most have a box of different sizes but you may have to ask as they are usually behind the counter.

I am sure that is what I used for mine when mine broke. It was used P38 one and exactly the same as the one I took off. Thought you could still get aftermarket replacement ones for a lot less but last time I looked was some time ago!!
