Field Marshal Dr. Opti:
According to the news tonight the clear up and conviction rate for crime is piss poor.

I'm not remotely surprised.

My sister was burgled by a pair of 12 year old feral misfits. They were clearly caught on CCTV and she knew exactly who they were, their names, and even where they lived with their dysfunctional unemployable parents. Everybody knew who they were.

A few days later she was told that no further action would be taken unless further evidence became available. Needless to say no coppers turned up.

I imagine they sold all her goods on Ebay.

Lizzie Zoom:
Yes, it is far from satisfactory, but it is not just the police at fault for low prosecution rates.

Many officers work hard to investigate and gather evidence, only to be very frustrated when the CPS decide for them not to press charges and to drop the case.  Often that is a financially based decision to save the CPS from the costs of going to court.

Overall though, the whole system needs a overhaul, quite apart from getting the police service back to the number of experienced officers they had in and before 2010.

I should add of course the unavoidable observation that our justice system has gone soft on crime, with stupidly weak sentences given to criminals when cases are taken to court.  What deterant is that?  It just increases the crime rate as the criminals are led to believe they can make crime pay as there will be little punishment when they are caught and prosecuted. >:(

Sir Tigger KC:
When the boys and gals in blue (or more often black these days)  are not making dancing videos on TikTok, or schmoozing with the gays at at Pride events, they are going round mob handed to arrest people for things they posted on Twitter.  ::)

They're far too busy to do anything about crime!  :)

Migv6 le Frog Fan:
They recently tasered a 90+ one legged man who was getting unruly in a care home, and he died.
Where is the outrage, the protests, the pulling down of statues ?
He lived in England and wasnt a serial criminal thousands of miles away.
I suppose " One legged old age pensioners lives matter", doesnt have quite the same ring to it.  ::)

GastronomicKleptomaniac:
The problems stem from higher up and wanting to be seen to be acting on the most politically charged subjects.

As a rule, bobbies love catching burglars (I've even seen a DI grab his kit and a plain car and go flying off to a suspicious figure in a garden one night). I have had a dog unit travel about 50 miles on blues* because we had a glimpse of a poor suffering individual who had turned to crime to make ends me- no, wait, thieving toerag.

Real victims of real crimes are getting service day after day. Not just a bobby attending, but followups from other agencies, other departments, victim support, etc, etc. But its run of the mill and doesnt make headlines.

Social media and tech as a whole has changed the face of crime. Noone really robs a bank with a gun anymore, but they'll cream thousands off bank accounts online. Unfortunately the interpretation of the existing laws means people make mountains from molehills especially when people say nasty things from behind a keyboard.

I don't doubt that there are also many people being let down, and it boils my blood when I hear of dire service. Unfortunately our system is utterly broken, crims come up with ridiculous and fanciful ways of creating "reasonable doubt" and CPS lack the guts to run with it. They're very keen on early pleas, not for justice, but to save the cost of a trial. Look at how many courts are closed and empty compared to 20 years ago.

I can't think of  single decent grafting bobby who thinks dancing or wearing a politically charged hat does anything other than further undermine the authority and respect of the unfiorm. It's not a job to get social media likes. It is a job for community engagement, where you can go and speak to people, explain the job, answer their questions, put them at ease. Show them the fancy kit, let them have a photo in the van... And this shouldn't only be at high visibility events but day to day. For everyone.

*Which says a lot about the lack of specialist resources but don't get me started.
