Crank Sensor??
« on: 25 March 2012, 09:05:53 »

Have just put Omega back on road after 2 year rest. 2.5 auto petrol, X reg
Has run for ~800 miles without any problem - now loss of power , engine 'surges' at 2000 rpm causing the car to try and kangeroo
fault codes are:-
not running  135, 19
running 135, 19
19 is 'incorrect rpm signal'
135 telltale check voltage low

does the crank shaft sensor drive the rpm? if so this may be on the way out.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

haven't yet checked alternator output ( but car has started ok every time),
seems a bit thirstier than i used to get .

work done on car is:-
timing belt, water pump (many thanks to jamesv6)
battery, silencer, front wishbones, geometry check (WIM)

So i am thinking of changing crank sensor--(car has done 116000 so maybe due one soon anyway)

code 19 is deffo crank sensor as for 135 it may be related to crank sensor fault,if it was me i would just change the crank sensor (with a genuine gm one) then see what happens  ;)

Yes , that's the conclusion i was coming to,
What I don't want to do is use it , then it fails in the dark, in the middle of nowhere, in a snow storm , when i am running late- well that is when things usually fail. will get one ordered next week and hopefully fit it this coming weekend

its only a matter of time before it will totally fail.is the car difficult to start that sometimes is a clue to how close it is to failure  :-\

Car has always started easily , and still does - but no power.
So would assume that it is about to fail-
so i will revert to company astravan- at least I get 55-60 mpg

Yes...code 19 is the Crank shaft ensor for sure...I suggest you follow the excellent guide and makesure 2 things are followed
1. Only use genuine VX part (check the connector ends are the correct one bought, oval or square). It's false economy to buy other cheapos from factors etc. With my VX employee partners discount, my new sensor was £46.00
2). Make sure the new sensor cable is routed correctly away from heat sources such as manifold and exhaust pipes otherwise premature failure.

It took me, (non mechanic !"), about 1.5 hours to do, but only because I couldn't free the lower connection easily(torx nut) until I had WD40'd and then wiggled the plug about with a small set of mole grips and then pulled it out.

The difference was immediate, and fixed the problem. The code 19 disappeared automatically after several good starts.

Good luck
