My grandson is living in Auckland at the moment. Will have to ask him if the bar he's working in is submerged yet.

they are big. The photo i saw showed a shipping container and a metal shed partially blocking the section where he got into trouble.

Just heard from my grandson in Auckland. He is ok, (he lives on the 11th floor). The bar he works in is flooded out so he has some time off, but can't do much as it's very hard to get about. Also more heavy rain is forecast.

  i spent some time in Kiwi quite a few years ago  (1954/65) started off in Timaru spent time in Wellington & Auckland  then settled in the very south at a place called Bluff. Played rugby league as A Nother  for a team from Invercargill  good memories. the Bluff was always wet & windy

Don't know what the final toll is. At least 4 people I work with have been flooded out. Two cannot be contacted.

Sorry to hear that, Andy. I hope the two who can't be contacted are just off the grid and nothing more. Glad you and yours are relatively safe.
