General Car Chat / New motor (finally)
« on: 01 September 2022, 21:55:49 »
Well, I've finally had the new disco for a sufficient period of time to be able to make a judgement. In summary, it's an extremely nice place to sit, hugely capable, oh and chuffing enormous. I've done close to 600miles in it this week and I would struggle to think of a car I'd rather do it in.

The software in it is extremely well designed as far as I can tell, inasmuch as things like lane keep assist, adaptive cruise etc are much smoother than in any other car I've had, oh and Android Auto seems to work perfectly, a genuine first IME. Really my only concern is how long it's going to last me at 20,000 miles per year, because just now I really don't want to get rid of it for a long time to come!

The engine is a much much better match for the car than the 4 pot. While you wouldn't describe it as fast (and certainly not agile!) c300 bhp and 500ft lbs is enough to be able to overtake when needed and to make effortless progress the rest of the time. Oh and it's doing a measured 35mpg (the guessometer reckons 37.5  ::)), which is impressive given the bulk it's hauling around.

I don't really have anything to criticize it for just jow and reliability has been good so far. The only issues I've found so far are 1. The sim card in the centre console keeps springing out whenever I try and poke it in ;D. Whether the clip is broken, or I'm just being ham fisted, I don't know. I will get it sorted. 2 there is a slight noise from the drivers window when it's on the way up, maybe needs some lubricant, or maybe a worn window regulator. I'll get both sorted at some point soon, but neither are an immediate priority.  :y

Gratuitous pic of the car in it's natural habitat  ;D

General Car Chat / My LR Reliability thread
« on: 25 July 2022, 15:25:37 »
Collected the new car on Saturday, drove it home 140miles, no issues. Got in it yesterday morning to go to the local shop.... Oh cr@p

The car felt a touch rough at idle, but I did wonder if it was just being a cold diesel. So I took it out anyway and it felt like it had about 40bhp, give it a shoe full and it got up a bit, but immediately threw a "Restricted Performance" message on the dash and actually stalled as I came to a halt.  ::)

So I spoke to the supplying dealer and agreed for it to go to a local specialist for diagnosis and repair with them picking up the tab. That was an interesting journey trying to stop the bugger dying in traffic.  :o. Its showing a pair of codes for a NOX sensor and turbo under-boost, neither of which is a smoking gun. The specialist has sent the codes and live data to autologic to see what insight they have to direct further diagnosis.

2017, 51,000 miles, Full LR service history.... something of an unpromising start.  :-\

General Car Chat / Waving bye bye to 'the appliance'
« on: 11 July 2022, 22:20:35 »
New job beckons in a month or so, meaning the company is reclaiming the id3 after only 6 months and 11,000 miles.

As its 2022 and the world is currently mad, no new company car is going to be available this side of Doomsday, so I will be purchasing myself a new car. The question is what exactly.... I will be doing close to 20,000 miles a year, which at £2/litre is no joke in any car. Electric maybe??

Answers on a digital postcard  ;D

General Car Chat / Zafira dipstick tube
« on: 08 June 2022, 16:03:36 »
Due to a stint in hospital, then a holiday, the 1.6 Zafira B has been in bits for quite some time. The original job, which was causing me a bit of grief was oil cooler seals.

I was able to get the exhaust manifold off surprisingly easily with one notable exception. The FU£KING dipstick tube. According to the workshop manual it should just be held in by an o-ring and pop out. Could I get it out, could I hell! As a replacement was cheap from Evil Bay I ended up cutting it off to carry on with the rest of the job but I still haven't cured my issue. If the weather's fine this weekend I'm going to have another crack at it but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this issue or had any sage advice. I'm tempted to drop the sump and knock the tube out from below, or rig up some sort of puller with a threaded rod, but if I'm missing a trick, I'd love someone to enlighten me!

General Car Chat / Well, that's my weekend sorted
« on: 27 April 2022, 14:10:25 »
Time to catch up on all the delayed maintenance on the Zafira, so been on a bit of a spending spree today:
  • Clutch kit
  • Gearbox oil
  • Timing belt kit
  • Aux belt
  • Water pump
  • Oil, filter & sump plug
  • Air filter
  • Pollen filter
  • Fuel filter
  • Oil cooler seals
  • Coolant flush

Now I'm sure there's folks on here that could deal with all that in a morning with one hand behind their back; in my case I reckon I'll be lucky if I can do it in a full day.  ;D

General Car Chat / Zafira B - slight wheel wobble
« on: 22 March 2022, 12:11:00 »
As per title, I'm getting a slight wheel wobble on the skip ('59 plate Zaf B 1.6 manual), but only under specific conditions.

The car is bang on, pulls up straight, no general issues. But, when travelling at about 60-70mph I get some steering wheel wobble, but only if I lift off the throttle. If I'm on the accelerator or brake, no wobble. I'm wondering if its a wheel bearing on the way out or a worn CVJ, but I'm not getting any rumbling which would be what I would expect from a wheel bearing. The clutch is also very worn (96k miles on it) and on my replacement list for the coming months, but I don't see any kind of connection.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most grateful. I'm not about to start throwing parts at it as tbh its mild enough to not be an issue for now, but I do know these things seldom get better over time.

General Car Chat / Gas Struts - where from?
« on: 20 January 2022, 11:06:01 »
Since the weather has dropped cold I've noticed an occasional but severe pain to the top of my head when going near the Zafira.

Closer inspection has revealed that the tailgate is not lifting as high as it did in the summer, causing occasional but violent collisions with the upper regions of my bonce.

So, new gas Struts are in order, but where to buy from? I can't get hold of anyone at Vx to tell me how much they'll charge me but I suspect the answer is 'far too much'. I could go down the ebay route (c£15 a pair) but I don't want to do the job again in 7 days time. So has anyone used a particular supplier they could recommend, before I just go out and buy a crash helmet.

General Discussion Area / Omega (Desmond) engine swap
« on: 24 October 2021, 20:40:00 »
Question for those with more omega knowledge than me (which is most of you).

How much work would there be in swapping the 2.2 engine in an omega b for either a) a 2.0 lump b) a V6. What modules/ ancillaries would need to carry over from the donor in both cases? Also what coding required?

TIA

I'm nearing the end of the house project and I have some 22mm BPEX pipe left over and a few push fittings.

Next house will be one that I stay in for a while and I want to plumb compressed air in around the garage (not least so the compressor can make its noise somewhere else). I was wondering if I can use a) the pipe and b) the push fittings for air. The pipe seems to be oil resistant and rated to 175psi @23 degrees but I am less sure what effect the oil will have on the fittings.

I don't mind spending the money to buy other stuff if required, but if I can use what I have then why not!  :y

General Car Chat / Zafira B - what to look out for?
« on: 28 July 2021, 23:23:10 »
I'm looking for an mpv that will double up for moving a load of stuff out of my old house over the coming months. Zafira B seems good value compared to others (s-max for example) and I'm already ruling out anything french).

I know a few members on here run these and I was wondering what things I should avoid/look out for when buying.

I know that the 2.2 petrol can have expensive fuel pump issues and my personal view is that a 1.6 seems inadequate for moving a shed around. So I guess that leaves a 1.8 petrol or a 1.9 cdti. Of the two I guess the diesel would have more grunt, but what are the turbos, clutches, dmfs etc like?

Any advice welcome.  :y

As above, is anyone breaking or have on hand a 2.2 petrol cylinder head or alternatively a full engine (less ancillaries) they would be willing to part with?

Omega General Help / Problem with the Desmond - head gasket?
« on: 04 July 2021, 14:10:26 »
Afternoon all,

My parents are having an issue with their '03 auto Desmond estate and advice from the collective wisdom of the forum would be greatly appreciated.

A few weeks ago the car dumped all its coolant out through a big crack in the radiator end cap (not totally sure if this was a cause or a symptom of the underlying problem). After it was towed home, dad pulled the plugs and found cylinder 4 looked wet. There was no water in the oil, or vice versa.

The peculiar thing is, all cylinders hold good pressure when tested; they were tested both warm and cold and left for c20mins without pressure drop on any cylinder.

The car's now had a new rad and been pressure tested, so all should be well right... except on its last test run, it threw a load of its coolant out through the cap on the header tank.

The car performed normally for the first 10-15mins of driving with the thermostat opening as it should and the temp gauge reflecting this. But after c15mins the car threw its coolant out, without overheating ???

It sounds to me like a head gasket issue, but it's odd to me that it's intermittent and the cylinders all hold pressure. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated before an exploratory head removal gets underway.

General Car Chat / Today's courtesy car...
« on: 07 June 2021, 13:19:14 »
As part of today's BMW Shrewsbury service, I had a very nice man try to do a bit of up-selling by way of my courtesy car, given the RRP, I think he's going to be disappointed, but still, not a bad thing to knock about in for the day...

The car feels a world away from mine, much more plush inside, but also it feels heavier, much less chuckable, despite being a RWD car, the steering feels extremely heavy and yet somehow devoid of feel, but it has a nice stereo and refused to dip below 40mpg despite some effort on my part.

General Discussion Area / Pin wrench - where to buy?
« on: 17 April 2021, 10:42:34 »
One of the builders we've had on site has had it away with the pin wrench for my 9" grinder.  ::)

I've bought a couple of replacements from Toolstation, machine mart and the like, but all seem to be made of 99p/tonne monkey metal and bend on first or second use.

Anyone got a decent tip on where to buy one, without buying a grinder along with it?

This morning two colleagues of mine took a BA flight (against my advice) out of LHR to CDG.

They were originally booked on the 0720 but received an email about 10 days ago saying they had been bumped onto the 0935 as their flight was cancelled. However when they got to the airport they saw on the board that the 0720 had departed - on time  ???, BA's website confirms this. I can't imagine that BA had managed to overbook that flight as there were all of 17 passengers on the 0935 - anyone seen this before?

As an aside, the 0935 actually left 2hrs late due to a last minute aircraft switch resulting from a botched repair. So rather than an 0930 arrival they got in at 1344.  ::)

All in all an episode that's done nothing to reverse my opinion that BA are an overpriced sh!tehouse that you'd have to be mad to offer your money to.
