It's a 40/50/80 whatever billion pound project, if a company/business was spending that then the CEO would ask for a shed load more than 500k

HS2 Ltd will milk it for all its worth, until common sense prevails, and the project is canned.

In the late 1960's and early 1970's (when STEMO's age was still in double digits, just :P) they talked about motorways costing about £0.5m a mile and I think the raised part of the M4 in London was the first motorway to break the £1m per mile. Now HS2 is costing almost £125m per mile, have things really increased in price x 250 since then? :o :o :o :o :o

By the time it opens in 2076 2026 at an on budget cost of £76tnbn, I expect the first supersonic hyperloops will be in service in advanced countries, while we are still building expensive transport systems with Victorian technology.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

...while the existing network is already pre historic.

If there was nout else to spend the money on then maybe. But we're nowhere near rich enough as a country, and way behind on spending.

Our management would come up with thus sort if scheme. Misguided nonsense based on no sense or reality whatsoever.

A commuter on tele this morning said . Why don't they put three more carriages on and change one of the 1st class into a second class as they are empty?

I would go further and run extra trains in between- sort of asset utilisation

Just send my 590,000 to my new Greek bank account please.
