Title: Highway Code rule 243
Post by: Shackeng on 22 January 2020, 16:01:06
...states, amongst others : Do not park opposite, or within 10 meters (32') of, a junction.
Where is the 10 meters measured from, the centre or edge of the adjoining roadway? :-\
I have asked a Highways Engineer, who was uncertain. So perhaps I am being optimistic asking here.

Logic (?) dictates that it should be to the edge of the qadjoining carriageway; that gives most clearance for other road users and more opportunity to persecute prosecute transgressors!

That sounds sensible, so is probably wrong. ::)

Apparently a piece of law that the Wiltshire Constabulary have decided is irrelevant, never enforced, always ignored and damned annoying. I've even tried to report it on "101" .. to be told "parking is the councils responsibility" .... so the Wiltshire Police actualy ignore the Road Traffic Act .....   :(

As I understand it, in the wording of the Highway Code, MUST NOT means it is legally enforceable and have the relevant law reference printed beneath. DO NOT rules, and breaches thereof, are dealt with by the Local Authority under the Road Traffic Act 2004, and fines up to £75 may be imposed for such breaches.  :y

If that law, or the law about parking on pavements was enforced around here, or in any urban conurbation, no one would be able to get within half a mile of their house and the roads would be impassable.

Yes, it is the local authorities responsibility, but for years I have yet to witness any of the very many vehicles that are parked in such a way to infringe that law ever to be ticketed.

With the parking situation in any town or city now, especially in the suburbs, with so many vehicles having to find parking space, unless their are yellow lines(which are again the responsibility of the local council) it is now not enforced. ::)

Unless the parking is causing very real public danger, the police will not usually get involved as they are very busy with other more important criminal matters.  Even untaxed vehicles that are parked on the road usually only get the attention of the DVLA clamper units. ;)

I suppose we'll have to wait until some poor unfortunate individual is knocked over and killed whilst having to walk around an illegally - and selfishly - parked vehicle that is blocking the footpath .....

I've been driving for over 50 years and can honestly say I have NEVER parked on a footpath... I was taught not to by my driving instructor who also taught me that the car is NOT king .. the pedestrian is  ....

Ok..shut up you silly old fool and get a f**king life. The police have got better things to do than run around after the local busybody. Better?  :)
Oh dear, answered before your edit. Now I've done it, I'll fall foul of forum rules, no doubt.

Sorry I couldn't get back to you straight away, Nigel, I was busy. I saw a youth drop an empty crisp packet outside my front door, so I went straight out to make a citizens arrest. He was too quick for me and made good his escape. I rang 999 and the police operator told me to pick the evidence up with a pair of the wife's tweezers (so as not to contaminate it), and put it into a freezer bag. CSI will be round as soon as they've finished with a murder case in Leeds and take it away for forensic examination.
They are hopeful of an arrest  :y

Did i read somewhere that after the magic date of the 9th of April this year, the local councils take control of parking from the police. If so, with the magic employment of thousands of street rangers,PCSO,s, street wardens, call them what you will, the streets will instantly be cleansed of illegal and anti social parking.  ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D .Please excuse my sarcasm as i,ve had a shite day. Wifey in hospital under the knife again. It seems never ending poor old gal. :'(

not on a junction, but on a dual carriage way outside a local train station .... taxi drivers pick-up/drop-off outside the station & park in the nearside lane of 2
Reported to the council who reckon it's 'nothing to do with them' and report it to plod. Plod never even replied  ......  :-X

With all the cash generated from various vehicle taxes, fines, parking, etc you would think some fkr who knows what is needed to sort parking out before getting swathes of people / cars, would be employed to make it possible. If it ain’t there don’t draw the fu(ing crowds for fks sake.

I live in the burbs & the parking my way is a nightmare  >:(
Next door,,, Mum has a car & so does Dad not forgetting  his van & eldest boy has the same.
Now their girl is learning & has a fiesta, her pink scooter is now just left on the pavement.

We`ve got 3 cars 3 bikes, a van &   the driveway is currently blocked by a caravan   ::) & that`s just 2 houses out of 20 in our road  ::)

They fixed that problem here.

The council made the inside lane a taxi rank and bus stop  :D ;D

Never mind parking, I hope you are all opening your drivers door using the Dutch Reach (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/news/the-dutch-reach-how-opening-car-door-like-the-dutch-could-save-lives-cycling/) (that's not a sexual thing) as it will be added to the highway code this year.

New drivers also won't be allowed to drive at night - so presumably they will only be going to work between March and September.. ;D

Nor should they be allowed to drive at night, unless they fit a pair of powerful lights on the front of their cars, so its similar to driving during the day...……

 ....

That's what p***'s me off. They double park in the nearside lane a car's length from the massive layby intended for picking up/dropping off.
I was once behind one city banker that thought it was OK to stop in the outside lane to drop off ...

On some of the residential streets round here they even park on the curve of the junction! As more kids are stopping home longer due to not being able to afford to move out into their own homes the number of cars per household increases so off road parking[if any available]at the home is not enough to hold the number of vehicles and given cars are getting progressively bigger the amount of space is no longer enough.
