General Discussion Area / Re: Court Summons - TV Licence Evasion
« on: 13 January 2012, 12:11:51 »
My understanding is that a TV license is required to view programs as they are broadcast.

This is true of all channels and includes programs broadcast across the internet.

This is also why the likes of iplayer are excluded as they are not viewed as they are broadcast.

The key thing to remember is that the license is not there to give you the right to watch the bbc (even though that is where most of the funding goes), its there to give you the right to view as broadcast media in the UK be it on a phone, Tv, laptop etc.

Sounds about right  :y If you have the means to watch anything as it is broadcast (whether you actually do or not) a license is required.

http://www.tvlicenceresistance.info/forum/index.php  Good info on this site  :y

Legal framework : http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/about/foi-legal-framework-AB16/

So I take it that you don't need a licence to watch IPlayer or other playback service ;)

I believe, if you have the means to watch TV, be that with a TV, PC, Laptop, etc. then you need a license.  I don't think it is required to watch things that are stored / streamed at the user request like BBC iplayer, if it was a 'live stream' of a BBC channel you would need a license.

This is where it gets horribly grey because it comes down to haveing the means to watch not if you actually do or not.  It's arguable but I can also understand (to a degree) why they went down that route.  If it stated that you have to actually watch it for the fee to be enforceable then obviously, everyone wouldn't pay and would just deny they watch.

microsoft security essentials.. free and dont bring the system to its knees..
ive looked at that cem and its a possibility but some say its not very efficient, but as you say doesnt slow the system downa nd for his browsing it may be ok :y

I use security essentials alongside AVG and find it very good. It does require some manual inputs from you once a week but very easy to use. It does only work on Vista and Windows 7 though. Can't find a version for windows XP.

And a friend tells me it works well on boobies sites  :y

Microsoft Security Essentials is available on XP and above, its the same download for all of them as far as I know.

I put that on an XP machine yesterday when I finished rebuilding a friends old laptop.  I use MSE on all my families machines (4 laptops and 4 desktops) and never had a problem with any of them.  I also use Malwarebytes Antimalware and Spybot Search and Destroy once per week on each machine, they rarely find more than a couple of tracking cookies.

Probably confusing the lock-up for another gear. ???

Easily done if you don't know I suppose, it does sound like another gear change.

Half the price and a million times sexier (in my opinion  ;)), as long as you don't do corners  :D

I take it you don't live around Lincoln area, driving with one headlight out seems to be a regional requirement here.  I see, probably a minimum of 5-6 cars one the way to work (20 miles) and the same again on the way home, every day.

Either that or driving in the dark on sidelights with front fogs on, that seems to be becoming more and more popular.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.  Sorry for the slow reply from me, I have been having internet issues all weekend at home, back at work now so can catch up a bit.

Would be interested in the details for the guy in Lincoln if you could PM me.  I work in North Hykeham (near LA Fitness) so can get the car to people in Lincoln easy enough.  Not looking at doing it until the new year, no money atm with Christmas and everything else, just want to get it done as I don't know it's history.

I have a Haynes manual for it and it reads as a relatively simple job.  I could probably do it if I put my mind to it but it is one of those jobs that you hear horror stories about haha.  Also, if I have a problem the first time I do it (never done any cambelt jobs before) then I don't have anyone to run to at a weekend and would need the car for work on the Monday.

I was just wondering (well, I know a few members are in the area) if there is anyone in or around Lincoln that would be able and willing to help me / show me how to do a cambelt kit + water pump change on my Astra SRi (T Reg, X20XEV engine)?

I don't know when it was last done and have only had the car a few weeks, so looking at doing an overall service and changing these to cover the bases.

Won't be until after xmas / new year, I would obviously supply all parts etc and some beer tokens or suitable other compensation for your time.  I have been told its pretty easy on these but I have never done a cambelt change of any kind before so would like to do it with someone who knows what they are doing the first time I do it.

cheers all.

You could just break down your FOI request into smaller chunks, which would obviously mean alot more work for you, but it would negate their 'costs too much get out cause', and make alot of work for them but you would get the info you're after.

There's too much local authority staff/governance/regulation/mind control anyway. It's run like a business, they're like legalised scroungers. They seem to forget that they are just clerks who rubber stamp the decisions made by us, the people. The problem is people submit to it all.

I would look at this route.  It is a bit more work and effort from you, but by breaking it down into a number of smaller FOI requests.  Work around the limit they have specified and see what they do.  If each individual request (send them a few days apart etc and don't reference any other request in each one) requires less that £450 of work, they surely can't use that 'get out of jail free' card.

I shifted by V reg 2.0l CDX Estate last week. Leather interior (in v good nick), paintwork wasn't immaculate with some light scratches, small (badly done) touch ups and a small dent in the passengers door, heated seats didn't work but overall all working.

Got £600 for it.

Good luck with the docs Rob.

Stress and depression can be very serious and depression can often go unnoticed by the person affected.

I know in my last year on the Army I was posted a long way from home but within the UK.  I hated being there and already had problems with the 'green machine' prior to that posting and had a lot to deal with at that unit.  I knew I hated being there etc but didn't really see the effect it was having on my family, it wasn't until after I signed off and got out (at the 18 year point so by no means an easy decision) that I found out more details.  Sat round the xmas table, first xmas after getting, chatting away with my mum, dad, wife and kids and it was there that it came out that it had got to the stage where my own kids were scared of me coming home at the weekends because I would explode with anger at the slightest little thing!  It was at that point that it really hit home how bad it had got.

All I would suggest is pretty much what you appear to be doing, see the doc / HR at work and get it acknowledged dealt with.  As has been said, your employer has a duty of care for your health and well being.

You are talking about it and doing the right things it seems, I sat on it and did nothing and I think the outcome would of been far worse for me if I hadn't come out of the Army when I did.

General Car Chat / Re: Thoughts on price for a 2.0 Astra SRI
« on: 21 November 2011, 20:41:46 »
It was a nice car but I probably didn't maintain it as well as I should of, age thing I suppose.  I ended up trashing it on a back road in east anglia, I wasn't speeding at the time but hit a pheasant on the road and that snapped the tracking rod ... or at least that all I can ascertain from after the event.  I lost steering and was heading toward an open field, I remember thinking at least it wont be too bad, next thing I knew I was upside down.  What I didn't see was the ditch between the road and the field!

Got the Astra in the end for £800, it's pretty tide with two previous owners.  Has a couple of niggles, no aerial, intermittent wipers keep stopping mid screen, a front fog light out and some bubbling on the rear arches, but nothing major.
