TV - Cars & MOT Checking
« on: 19 March 2021, 10:33:45 »

Just been watching Heartbeat episode and one cars in it caught my eye.  Didnt know what car it was so nipped on ECP and put the reg in but no joy.  So nipped on the gov MOT check site and it came back as a MG

MG MIDGET
Check another vehicle

Colour
Red
Fuel type
Petrol
Date registered
21 September 1953
MOT expired on
12 June 2013

History shows from 2006/13

But the bit that interests me is the car has done 56 miles, I for one dont believe this is the cars actual total mileage.

So with it being a classic car and possibly had a retore/rebuild would this mean the car can have the mileage changed on the MOT?

The Mileage entered on the VTS device (MOT system ) is whatever is showing on the odometer at the time of test .
it's NOT a testable item  , so the odometer part of the speedo could be brand new, 100,056 miles, broken etc or it could be a wrapped in cotton wool, never goes anywhere ,just for TV and to look at car  .
what mileage did previous MOTs show  :-\

Also, registrations can be swapped from one car to another ,which can confuse things and for TV purposes (private set) they can put on a completely unrelated registration plate (and often do)

Funny enough I was watching Anglia car Auctions on line yesterday and was checking some of the vehicles history (MOT) there was a particularly nice SL 63 AMG which went for just under £10,000 less than 60,000 miles.

One of my relatives step son has an immaculate award winning Mk1 rally escort seems that only has done 100 miles. ::)

Odometers used to go back to zero once they passed 99999 miles.

Almost any car approaching 100k miles on the clock was almost worthless, as they werent expected to last very long even if the rust didnt get them.

There was an article in the paper a couple of months ago saying that the average life of a " modern" vehicle is 14 years now.

An Austin 1100 purchased in 1965 would have it's front wings held together by Isopon,  wire mesh, and a copy of The Daily Mirror by 1968.

My 1976 Triumph 2500S was effectively a terminally rusty shell by 1983.

You could buy fibreglass wings for the 1100, easier than trying to keep them together.

Not sure the word 'midget' would be used for a new car in 2021..... ::) ::) ::)
