Picture of an engine? If so, paperclip it.

I think all other orange ones have letters written on it?

That won't be possible for a couple of days - nobody in a 2WD car will make it up or down 'Brackley Mountain'

The orange symbol looks like a sort of tap :o

i think its next to the TC symbol on the right

it hasn't come on for 2 days and is very intermittent

The manual is for a later car, but most of the warning lamps are the same.

OH BUGGER!
My fault is the middle symptom
should i not drive it?
it only had a new exhaust and cats about 2 years ago
i hardly use the bloody thing

Exhaust emission
Control indicator lights up when ignition is
switched on. Goes out  shortly after engine
starts.

If it lights up when the engine is running:
Fault in the emission control system. The
permissible emission limits may be exceeded.
Consult  a Vauxhal l Dealership immediately.

If  it flashes when the engine is running:
Fault  which may damage  the catalytic
converter – see page 150.
Consult a Vauxhall

yet again you are running around like a head less chicken!

We have gone from, "light looks like a tap" to "My fault is the middle symptom"  ::)

Have you actually done a paperclip test?

Wayne - you car does not have an emmissions light - on the 2.5 (and 3.0), that symbol is actually the Engine Management light.

This means the engine ECU has detected a fault.

Look in the Maintenence Guides Index for Paperclip test, and post up results :y

And at the moment, don't panic, just post up the results of that test :) - we'll let you know when its time to panic ;D

Must be contagious as I have had eml come on and off for most of the day.

I did a paperclip read and it came up as "89" which I am assuming is the n/s lambda sensor possible playing up...may be a loose wire or the sensor is on its way out.

I do have a spare lamba so when can get under car in dry will get them swopped over as another 4-6 inches of snow has fallen today.

Strange thing is car is running fine with no hesitation or uneven tick over so not much to worry about ...I hope.

Do the clip test wayne...you may find a similar problem as mine.

I realize it's a long shot, but mine came on the day after i put 20 ltrs of fuel in, after just buying the car. I know there's a long on going debate about supermarket fuel. I bought my fuel from Sainsburys.

I was wondering if compacted snow and general rubbish on roads has caused wiring issues with mine.

Code "89" does seem to point to n/s sensor with open circuit so I am thinking lamba is playing up.

It indicates the engine managment has detected a fault which requires rectifying.

Only way to trace is read codes stored in ecu and then advise.

As your car model is able to provide stored codes by doing paperclip test, that should be your first course of action.

Without that it is impossible to establish if major/minor or non existant.

okay then

done a paperclip test
it flashes once, then flashes twice a few times, thats normal isnt it?

after that, it flashed once followed by another 6 flashes, it done that a few times, then back to the flash once and flash twice scenario

how the hell do i fix fault code 16?
as i drove here today, the orange light stayed on for 5 minutes without going off, when i tried to accelerate, it had no problem, but i did feel some engine pinking going on.... im shit scared about driving home tonight as i know your not meant to drive if the light stays on, the strange thing is that on way home last night, it didnt come on once :o

Your problem:

16   Knock Signal Circuit 1

This sensor detects pinking, sends a signal to the ECU which then adjusts the ignition timing to compensate.
The sensor are known to be very reliable and most faults related to this are usually found to be damaged wiring on the sensor.
Have you had any work done on the car recently?

No need to be scared. You can safely drive the car but you will want to investigate the fault. It could simply be the fuel you have used.

i drove the car again tonight, at the moment im driving 50 miles per day in total, orange light came on again, i read somewhere that the alternator might be too blame, or is the error code 16 meaning exactly this, i have noticed my lights have become dinner
(see a previous post of mine)
as far as fuel goes, i always get it from Tescos or Sainsburys in Cowley in Oxford, i havent had any work done for about 3 years, apart from regular 6 monthly services.........

if you had charging problems then the RED charge light would be on. The orange EML light is flashing a knock sensor fault, sod all to do with charging, or lack of.

I hope you never read medical ailment books ..... you'd be booking your own funeral.  ;) ;) ;)

Don't you bother reading what people reply? You don't seem to! Yet again your in headless chicken mode.

Read & digest what people have said!

I quote from a previous post which you 'replied' to but just went on about your mileage and did not answer any of the questions:

Quote
The sensor are known to be very reliable and most faults related to this are usually found to be damaged wiring on the sensor.

How about you answer KneePads question, before you go around in circles, again!  >:(

the problem is, you've not even confirmed the fault yet and your already asking people to replace it for you!? You want to find the fault first, just because the car throws a code, that does no instantly mean its correct. Often far from it!

so you mean, the knock sensor or its wiring could be ok and it could be someat else? even though it throws up error code 16?

and before you shout again, woud HG gaskey failure or loss of coolant cause the EML to come on, im just asking!
my lights are also very low in brightness compared to what they used to be, though the knock sensor wiring could cause electrical fault such as this?

Wayne - check the wiring for signs of physical damage between the cable tray across front of cambelt cover down to behind alternator - its a thin coax, much like a thin mic cable.

Usual place is its rubbed aux belt, or got trapped somewhere during work being down.

You don't need to?  :-/

The cable tray across the front of the cambelt cover, check that first, follow it down to the alternator. You don't need to jack the car up...

Check the piccy on the following link.  Shows the cabling and the alternator, albeit with some of the bits at the front of the engine removed.  But you will get the gist of what TB suggests though.  Hopefully...   ;D

Wayne - 2nd pic

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189893357

(I know yours isn;t DBW, but that pic shows the wiring clearer that the 1st pic).

See the 2 large black rubber intakes going into large silver plenum on top of engine? Just to left is a red outline? Bottom left of that is a connector, and a wire comes out left, and up ove the cam cover?

;)

i cant see any fraying or damage whatsoever to that cable or its connector, is it advisable to squirt some WD40 into the male and female ends? apart from that, im not sure what to do now, and NO i wont be taking the cam cover off :(

I was wondering if compacted snow and general rubbish on roads has caused wiring issues with mine.

Code "89" does seem to point to n/s sensor with open circuit so I am thinking lamba is playing up.

On a bit of a tangent from the OP but mine has been doing this for ages, even after changing both lambdas, been advised it could be gasket blow or wiring issue.   :(

What moron of a monkey you are using to give you that diagnosis, sack him now.  >:(

How can a 'wiring issue' cause gasket blow & coolant loss (which is a common sympton in HG failure)

i`m still hoping its the knock sensor, The Boy knows about my possible HG problem, but most of you adivsed it wasnt that coz V6 rarely have a problem in this department, my cars drinking about half a cup of coolant every fortnight, and yes i have had the HBV changed

Follow the wiring down towards alternator, again checking for damage.

Leave it plugged in BTW.

Symptoms are reduced power above 2000rpm

I know you don't have a blown HG based on symptoms you have described.

no damage mate, went down as far as alternator, maybe coz ive unplugged it and squirted tiny bit of WD40 in it, i might suddenly be cured lol
will have to drive it and see
and yeah, i got reduced power and pinking, but shes fine if i dont drive more than 60mph in 5th gear
the light stays on and goes off when i slow down slightly, but as i said, its very intermittent

Looking at your photos, looks like it goes need coolant transfer pipe (look stainless pipe along side of engine). No signs of heat damage around that?

well, after doing the "italian tune up" the orange EML light came on again intermittently, but for the last 7 days, it hasnt come on whatsoever, ive stopped using Supermarket fuels and been paying a bit extra at BP and ESSO Garages on their cheapest unleaded

how does a knock sensor suddenly cure itself?   ::)

i have bought one anyway, my mechanic friends fitting it for me next week...

fuel economy is between 28.6 and 32.3 mpg
is that good?
i drive at between 56 and 75 mph pretty much

almost 4 weeks and no orange light coming on, i havent put supermarket fuel in at all, been using standard unleaded from BP Forecourts
how the hell can a faulty knock sensor repair itself?  :o

im bemused, but certainly not complaining  :)
