Thinking out loud now, as I suspect I all ready know where this explod is going to end up.

Can someone give me an idea on costs of parts for a Head Gasket repair.

Assuming I do the work myself, although never done a Mig before, Im guessing Im looking at the following-

Heads skimed plus new bolts,
Head Gasket pack,
Water pump,
New Cam belt and Tens..
Rocker cover seals,
In, out manifold gasket set,
Cam seals?,

Cost of above plus anything else Ive missed please.

inlet seals and cam seals can normally be reused.

Dont have the heads skimmed,it may well give serious problems when rebuilding - inlet fanimold wont match and cam timing wont be accurate.

It did get cooked, though.  Heads would need to be checked for warpage at least IMHO.

What are you saying Albs, dont skim or just forget the whole thing?

What are you saying Albs, dont skim or just forget the whole thing?

Im saying have them checked Chris,and if they are warped or simlar,source another pair of heads.I may be wrong though,Im not an expert by any means.

Thanks for your very kind offer James, issue is getting the car over to you and back could be a problem, shame you or I are not closer.

Another issue is the tax is out end off Dec. I have enough problems hidding cars as it is, although plenty of Mot left am I going to retax a car with a failed HG?.

If it helps anyone I have the full list of parts used in 2004 for a cylinder head exchange on my 2001 3.2. VX Luton advised the dealer not to skim the heads and so replaced - in those days retail price of both R1230076 and R1230077 was £390 each.

Thanks but still need an aprox cost for the job (assuming TC prices) for parts (assuming  no new VX heads) if done by me.

Did my mates 3.0 few months ago looking at £150 pair side for parts and skim if i remember right.

We are talking 1000s of an inch when skimming heads not inches...

I am also interested how cam timing wont be accurate when there are two idlers that will take a little extra slack?

Personally Chris I reckon its up in the air at the minute, so I would strip it down to see what the problem is, then go from there.

^ This is right, could have a hair line split up the cyl?

I think I may have got it wrong re cam timing (not sure where I got that from,but seem to remember reading it somwhere)
Have seen it posted several times (by MarkDTM and TB iirc) though,that V6 heads very rarely need skimming,and if they do it can only be a very light skim due to the fact that the inlet and coolant bridge will no longer line up.
