Is my ECU faulty ?

Ok, just to recap...
1. TC light on continuously and TC does not work.
2. Rev counter not working. ( both failed on startup after the car was laid up for a week.
3. ABS ok.
4. Car runs fine.

- Vauxhall could'nt find the fault.
- TC  switch has been tested. OK
- instrument panel conections checked. OK.
- Nothing shows up on paperclip test.
- ECU conections checked. OK.

Do I need a new ECU ?

What was the fault code from the ABS ECU, and if none, did they try to control the TC light via Tech2 (sometimes the drivers fail in ECU).

I doesn't sound like one of the common ABS ECU failures...

They did'nt say there were any fault codes from the ABS ECU. They said they checked everything bar taking out and checking the instrument panel and I checked the connections on that myself, seemed ok.
Why would that stop the TC from working though I thought.

I think your issue, as Marks_DTM said in your other post, that there is a problem with the rpm signal coming from engine ecu.

However, unless you know they have actually read ABS ECU, and tried testing the light driver circuit, they haven't done a proper job.

Get the ABS ECU read properly, to find out why it has put the light on.  If the ECU does not think the light is on, toggle the light on and off with Tech2 and see if the light on the dash follows the commands.

Then make the decision of what to do next.

I suspect you will have a code C0236 in the ABS ECU - no engine speed signal


This code being stored will disable TC.  This code is stored if signal on pin 30 of ABS ECU is at 12V or 0V or open circuit for more than a second (with engine running).  This signal goes through autobox ECU if one is fitted.

How big a job is it to remove the ABS/TC ECU?

Why would you want to remove it? Given your symptoms, its very unlikely that the ECU is at fault...

There is a guide on here by SteveW that should give you some idea of whats involved in changing ABS ECU.

Ok. So if the problem is possibly being caused due to no engine rpm signal to the ABS ECU, where should the signal be comming from. I presume it starts at the crankshaft sensor then goes to the main ECU? So could it be a problem in the main ECU ?
Or does it come via the instrument panel, which would point to that as being the culprit?

It goes from the engine ECU to the MID, TC/ABS ECU and instrument panel......

If you can scope the correct pin/wire from the ECU then you can determine if the signal is getting out of there or not....

Also....check the large X3 connector behind the battery (big round bugger) as all the engine to 'other circuit' connections go through this.....

If its an auto, I think the rpm signal from ECU goes through gearbox then to ABS. However, seeing as rev counter doesn't work, I would say the signal is being lost either in engine ECU (unlikely) or near it...

Not according to the wiring diagrams...
The TIS wiring diagrams seem to suggest, as do the TIS Guided Diags?  Does seem unlikely though, more likely that g/b just receives the signal...

I've just checked the large X3 connector behind the battery and one of the wires exiting it is broken, looks like it has been chewed through by a rodent. >:( Could this be the problem I wonder!!!!!!!!!! ::)
