Title: Value of Car and how to sell it.
Post by: Alec Grimsey on 21 January 2017, 18:03:09
Hi all,

Thank you for allowing me to join your group.

If possible I would really like the help and advice of all you Vauxhall Omega Enthusiasts.

My mother and father own a Vauxhall Omega Elite 3.0 V6.  It is 2001 and has leather interior, anti-lock brakes, power steering and satellite navigation ‘his’ and ‘hers’ seat adjustment, mirror adjustment settings, cruise control and heated seats.

The advice I could do with is that it has been sorn and garaged for approx. 6 years or so and has done from memory about 80,000 miles.  sadly dad passed away last year and mum doesn't drive so the question is what to do with it.

Dad loved the car and had hoped it would either go to a good home or perhaps even a museum but its not really old enough to be a classic or wanted by a museum.  I think mum would sell it to a good home but the resale value on them is very low so its difficult to know what to do.

Mum would like the space in the garage and it to go to a good home.

Can anyone advise how much they think it might be worth and who or where might be interested in purchasing it.

Any thoughts or comments would be gratefully received.

Thank you fro your help.

Kind regards.

Alec

Best bet is e-Bay or Gumtree, making sure you give as full a description as possible. At the very least it requires, new tyres, cambelt kit, full service, brake system overhaul, plus many other items, the cost of all these, at garage prices, outweigh the potential value of the car, so you are really needing an enthusiast to take it on.:y

Thank you for your reply.  dad was thinking of putting it back on the road two years ago, so it has had the cam belt, full service and all new tyres then.  So the tyres don't flat spot we take it up the road and back every now and then.  So its pretty well ready to go.

Thanks for the advice.

Two things will have an impact on its value...

As an used Omega, with no Mot, limited history and 5+ owners, it will be worth around £1-300 depending on the state of the bodywork...

As an investment, with only one owner, pristine bodywork, garaged and polished its entire life, every receipt from the day it was ordered, freshly serviced and Motd with absolutely no marks or scuffs inside, it could be worth £3-4,000. With one caveat: that you can find a buyer. Well restored Police Omegas are already appreciating staedily

Omegas will eventually appreciate and the only ones worth preserving are those that have genuinely been cherished their entire lives, even then, your potentially looking at a 5 or so year wait.

If it were me, and I had somewhere dry and safe to store it, then I would jack it onto axle stands, cover it up and leave it until I lost the storage. Then I would approach any local specialist dealers, and offer it to them as a modern classic.  The problem that you have is that 80,000 miles, whilst not high, is perceived to be more that people would like for a modern classic.

You could shop around locally for such dealers now, if you're keen to sell it on appraisal rather than simply popping it on Gumtree etc... equally gather all the paperwork, get the car looking a million dollars, a high quality valet would be £100 well spent, then on a nice , bright day, get several good pictures of the car... ebay only allows 12, so choose those ones carefully, but take pictures of everything, including all the nooks and crannies and link to the album in the advert, so that people can see how clean the car is for themselves. Then place a classified ad on ebay in the classic car section with a price you see reasonable... £3,500 or offers would do it if it's genuinely outstanding/owned from new etc... prepare to bide your time and eventually someone will buy it.

If, however, you want it sold quickly expect to see it gone for a relative pittance.

And whatever you do, don't put a price on here until you've enough posts to legitimately advertise here, or else it will be deleted. Limit is currently 250 posts, so get stuck in and you'll soon be there :y

You could start by posting some pictures in the gallery section, but I can not reiterate enough that you make ABSOLUTELY AND CATEGORICALLY NO mention WHATSOEVER of the car being actively for sale and no mention of price or links to your own adverts :y

Hi Alec,
If you could afford to run it and your mum would be ok with you doing so then I'd keep it and use it as maybe a weekend or summer car depending on how deep your pockets are, alternatively
Caster castle motor museum nearly got my Omega CD and they accept all sorts of modern classics there.

Personally if it was something I could recommission then I'd keep it as a way of remembering your Dad but everyone's different.

Sounds about right. Sadly, Omega`s are pretty much valueless in the sellers market

Maybe give her a polish and see how you feel, I saw ours covered in dirt and didn't get it but having restored mine it's part of the family and after a good clean something cliked.
Keep us posted though
