Laws on number plate locations
« on: 16 December 2012, 16:12:42 »

Don't know if anyone knows, basically we've got a 7 Series and we're taking the number plates off, rather than having them on the boot and front bumper, have them in the windows, basically a friend wants to borrow the car for a wedding, and thinks it'll look better going down the road with no plates  ???. Don't ask me I just said he could borrow it  ;D. Personally I've said to him, for the sake of a number plate, there's no point in risking getting pulled over? As I'm unsure on the law though I don't know what to recommend  :).

Number plates will be located:

In the window next to the tax disc:

Also on the rear window, behind the Blind:

I reckon any trafpol would pull the car over for the plate obstructing clear vision at the front Del, but that's just my take on it tbh  :-\

Almost certainly illegal as the plates will not be illuminated and additionally may not be able to be deciphered by ANPR equipment.

Definately a No, No, IMHO.  ;)

Well this is what I said to him, they're only screwed on anyway, so it's hardly a strenuous job. Apparently he & she would like pictures of the car as it's entering the place they're going too. Well it's down to him if he wants to risk it, as long as he sorts out his insurance cover, anything is liable to him should he get pulled over.

Number plates must be positioned on the front and on the back of the vehicle at their extreme points.  Be careful also Del that as the keeper, the registered owner, of the vehicle you will be responsible for any offence committed and therefore have to pay a fine of up to £1,000.  I personally would tell your friend a polite "NO" to what he wants to do.  It is just not legal on a public road. ;)

rear plate will be an issue if moved away from its illumination source

Number Plate Law

The law states that,

You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other
(e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).

Thats a farce to start with, the DVLA have and maybe still showing plate sales that have been modified to look like "Private Plates"  :-X

Why not just leave them where they should be, get some nice wide black tape and just tape over them while the photos are being taken.

Seems sensible to me. :y You certainly won't get away with them in the windows if stopped. That would really get his wedding day off to a good start. ::)

Just use Photoshop to remove them afterwards. Any decent wedding photographer should be able to do this.  :y

Even if you removed the number plates you would still need to use Photoshop to hide the screw holes!  ::)

Yeah.. For that matter. Plates on a black car won't take long to remove. :y

Personally I think it looks pants without plates.  Some 'old school' black and silver plates would look good, but again there's the same old killjoy legal issues again.
