In that case, let me know the make and model, as I have a close family member who is *very* interested.

I'm sure it's manufactured by Oticon not sure of model number he was under a specialist at the Pilgrim hospital in Boston who took a real interest in his condition, the price of the aid at the time was extremely expensive but he assisted with the trials that were being carried out at that time.

Cost, within reason, is not an issue if it helps them be able to join in a conversation.  Many thousands have already been spent with various supposed hearing specialists, all of which have not helped this person.

I will try to get some more information & pass it on , the silly part about it is that now he is 17 he chooses not to wear it the majority of the time " uncool" I presume.

I have a mate who also wears a hearing aid, although he can get by without one, but it helps him and its also got an ultra directional setting, which was handy for the days when we could sensibly spend a Friday night talking non stop shite in the Red Lion.  He tells me at work, he frequently just turns it off, or sets it to BT streaming, just so he doesn't have to listen to the students talking shite.  In some ways I'm jealous I can't turn off hearing our grads at work ;D

Appreciate any info you glean for him, and I'll pass on to family member :y

Doug the farmer is profoundly deaf but will not invest in a hearing aid despite being absolutely loaded
If profoundly deaf, its probable a hearing aid would not help matters sufficiently to make 1 or 2 worthwhile.

They work best for people who are slightly hard of hearing, or those that have a poor (but not no) response of certain frequencies.

My Dad would probably disagree. He's worn 2 hearing aids for most of his life and has practIcally nothing without them. I think he told me once that his rolls off to -60db long before 1 KHz. They can do all sorts of tricks like shifting frequency ranges around but do need to be properly set up by an audiologist. He's never gone in for anything fancy with bluetooth - just the behind-the-ear NHS jobs. (I doubt he'd get on well using a phone in any circumstances without lip reading and he's long since been unable to appreciate music).

The modern hearing aids are pretty clever, DSP based with multiple microphones so can operate in omni directional or a chosen direction (hence the phone apps) and can be fully tuned to a users hearing response (I personally would want to be able to mess with this myself which some allow).

Cant recall the major chip manufacturer off hand now (Onsemi I think), but there is only a few suppliers, and all the  aid manufacturers use pretty much the same silicon internally.

Of course, given bluetooth to allow the app connection, its not a great deal more software to allow it to be used for audio playback.
