Post New Dis Pack Woes
« on: 17 January 2022, 15:48:03 »

Thanks to the great advice I received in my other thread on the major service and a faulty 2-4 -6 plugs Dis Pack / Coil Pack, I was able to quickly fit a new one today, without removing the plenum, but removing the cable tray.  Why I had not done that before on this Omega, when I had on a previous one, I do not know!! ::) ::) ::)

However, the management light for the exhaust / emissions is staying on when I start the car, and stays on when driving, even though all cylinders are now firing correctly. :( :(

Any ideas please on what this means / what I must do please? ??? ??? ???

The MOT is now due so I need to fix this. ;)

Read the fault codes
you may have trapped a wire, pulled out a lambda or other electrical connection ,who knows (the ECU does  ;D)

If light wasnt on before you replaced ignition module I expect you have trapped a wire from the mass in the cable tray or left something unplugged.

Retrace your work and it should appear what the issue is ...several connecters at back where you pull multiplug from module that might not be fitted properly .

Needs a code really to be sure .

But will the light need to be put out by code reader after anyway?

Not necessarily. Depends what caused it to come on.

Identify, fix and put some starts/miles under it and if it's happy then it will sort itself out. Usually  :D

That is something I am worried about.  The light came on during a test drive after I refitted the old, temporarily repaired, unit, then went off. It came on twice again before I got the car back to the garage, but again went out.

So is it due to something I have done before fitting the new module, or as a result of fitting it? That is what is giving me some doubt.  Have I damaged the cats? The worst senario ! :o :o

Tomorrow I will be doing the pedal trick to get any codes.

If it's running ok it won't be on the ignition side, besides, EML tends to stay on if misfire is bad enough. The knock sensor cable on one of mine is a bit fragile and that used to put EML on then it would extinguish itself later

Ah, thanks that is reassuring :y :y

Yes it is running very smoothly, so I know all is well with the ignition and combustion ;)

......

Hopefully the emissions light is only on after storing a code after your temporary repair upset it and will go out on its own after a few higher rpm runs.
We want you to go out and read the codes now, tonight, otherwise this thread will come to a standstill until you've read them.   ;) ;D

If I was back in my teens I would have gone out in all weathers, light or no light, even got under the car; nothing was impossible when it came to my A40.  But now I am an ageing biddy, suffer from joint aches and a bad back………..so sod it, I will not go out into the dark now, let alone anything else! ::) ;D ;D > ;)

Well, after arming myself with the OOF on how to do the pedal trick and printing off the sheet of error codes, I started the car this morning and, hey presto, the light went out with the others !! :y :y

So, thank goodness no need for the pedal trick and all now working fine.

Thanks to all who gave me advise on this and settled my nerves, especially YZ250 :y :y :y

Thanks.  A big weight has been lifted off my shoulders this morning so booked the car in for it's MOT, which will be after the two joints / flanges in the exhaust are re-gasketed after they were popping when I got underneath the car to adjust the handbrake.  So all is almost in order! :D :D  :y

It really doesn't matter, probably just an old code that cleared with clean starts.

As VXL V6 said, the misfire would have pinged the light on. Code reader may show the stored code, even with the light off, but as said, not an issue now.  :y

You get a much better balanced handbrake when you adjust at the internal brake shoes star wheel first.  :y

It's best to spend that 15 seconds READING the code right in front of you and know for sure IMHO
EML could pop on again at MOT ,costing time and retest fee or worse

To satisfy just you, the light was on because of plug number 4 mis-firing, and staying on when I drove two miles home.  I replaced the Dis Pack and so got all cylinders firing.  The light didn’t clear straight away, but left overnight the check system settled down so when I fired the engine up again, all was well.  Simples.

I have been doing car mechanics, and now reading the OOF guides for decades, so am not a complete novice.  I was worried yesterday when the light would not go off, got reassurances on here that it could be very temporary, which it was thank goodness. :y

I am sure I will encounter more challenges with this now 18.5 year old car, as I have in the past, but I now do not lose sleep over a bloody car.  If the light comes back on, so be it. I will deal with it as I do with all challenges.

One of my daughters sons is partnered with a young women who last week gave birth to a baby by ‘C’ section under emergency conditions at St. Thomas Hospital London, warned that the baby, a grand daughter for me, could not live long, and so it died 6 days later.  That for me at the moment is far more important than any fxcking car :'(

Sorry to hear about your Granddaughter. Some things are indeed more important than cars.

The misfire code was a presumption without the actual code.

The light may not be a current issue, but without it, you're only guessing as to what caused it to come on.

If the light is now off, do we care what put it on?  ::)
;D

We don't, but the owner of the car should be interested...

I can see the next thread... "EML light is on again. What could it be?" or words to that effect  :-X

Extremely sorry to read about this very sad loss Lizzie. Puts all other lifes problems into perspective....

So you don't actually know what caused it to come on in the first place ???
It really doesn't matter, probably just an old code that cleared with clean starts.
It's best to spend that 15 seconds READING the code right in front of you and know for sure IMHO
EML could pop on again at MOT ,costing time and retest fee or worse

Unless Lizzie is one of those types that closes her eyes as she exits the motorway ON slip road and hopes for the best  :P
Covid, EML's, you worry too much  ;D
It's not my car ,so I'm not worried about Lizzie's EML  ::)
And she's unlikely to be on the roads I use when she does break down  :D
I was just giving a little advice  ;)
"fail to prepare... prepare to fail "
I'll get back in me Covid secure bunker  ;D

I know Dave. Thanks for your advice, but I have the AA to back me up if required for when I get it all wrong! ;) :D

Sorry to hear about your Granddaughter. Some things are indeed more important than cars.

The misfire code was a presumption without the actual code.

Thanks DG.  Just rather sensitive, more than usual, at the moment ;)
