Title: Price of a full exhaust on a 2.6?
Post by: vegasgo on 21 January 2011, 13:24:00
The exhaust on my 2.6 auto has fallen off, the whole lot needs replacing, inc cats. Local garage quoting around £550 plus labour. I nearly fainted! Do they really cost this much? Thanks.

If that includes cats it's quite reasonable from a garage ;)

Will they let you supply the parts? You could get them cheaper from a couple of sources :y

Should add... May be worth speaking to someone like Powerflow to see what they can do in Stainless

I would get some second hand cats from someone breaking an Omega (don't expect to get a great deal, as they got for good money scrap) then get the rest of the system from www.eternalcar.com.

Lot cheaper here & decent quality. Fit yourself or ask a friendly garage  http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Eternalcar/Vauxhall-/_i.html?_nkw=omega&_fsub=6253881&_sid=239919514

There isn't really all that much to an exhaust. granted, it would be an easier job with two people, but tools wise and technical ability wise, it, (cross fingers), shouldn't be a difficult job. Time consuming, yes. Difficult, no.

4x high axle stands.
Rubber or soft faced mallet.
Lots of Plus-Gas / penitrating fluid.
A breaker bar, ratchet and a selection of sockets, (including deep) in the sizes(s) needed for the nuts / bolts.

I reckon it would be possible to do the job over a weekend? So the question is, would you want to and save yourself a couple of hundred quid? Don't forget to factor in the cost of any new gaskets, rubbers, mounts and exhaust paste.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't know if the cat can be saved - at the join where the box is, is a rubbery joining tube and my mechanic said that can't be saved as it has to be welded? Maybe worth a second opinion?

Post by: tunnie on 21 January 2011, 15:13:28
why do the cats need replacing, did they fall off too? If you still have them, re-use them, pattern cats are shyte...

cat back exhausts from eternal would be about £120 +vat, they don't list the 2.6, but the 2.5 systems are the same, just tail pipe is a little shorter  :y

They haven't fallen off, but the one on the passenger side has some rubber tubing around a join - I don't know if this is normal so will take it to Kwik Fit for their opinion.

Only thing they are good for is getting it on the ramps, and letting you take a photo!

No hard sell from them, comfirmed diagnosis - all rotten, cat blowing at the flexy part in the middle. Quoted £750 all in!

To my shame, my Omega is actually a 2.2, not 2.6. onlineautomotive.co.uk quoting £348 for a full system. £60 to fit by me mechanic, so £410 looking a lot better.

On ebay, there's 2 different prices for the Cat, 99-01 and 99-03 - which would be mine?

Right, is the actual cat corroded, or the flexi join post cat before the exhaust splits into the Y for the centre boxes?

If so, this is not part of the cat, and costs just £15 for the part!

Cat back exhaust from eternal is £120 + vat!!!

£410 is insane, should cost you sub £200 easy

Post by: vegasgo on 21 January 2011, 18:27:31
As far as I know, it is blowing only at the flexi joint. The cat itself I think is fine. Third opinion?
Title: Re: Price of a full exhaust on a 2.6?
Post by: tunnie on 21 January 2011, 18:47:21
The flexi join is the common failure, cats, unless its been physically damaged (hit a rock or something) should be fine.

The flexi is part of the cat, but it can be cut off and a replacement welded on.

If you go for the new flexipipe make sure the actual flexi (criss cross mesh bit) is 4 inches long and not the whole thing is 4 inches long.

Yep, that`ll fit..........and FYI the exhaust from a 2.0ltr will also fit the 2.2 and it`s cheaper

Thanks. Doesn't the 2.0 have only 1 central silencer?

Bump.....?

My centre sections are like Swiss cheese, so I wouldn't mind knowing the definative answer to this also please chaps?

Yes it does fit. But you do need to buy an extension for the tailpipe from halfords as it stops short of the back bumper.
I fitted there system to my 2.6 last year.

Are the centre sections the same?

Yes, its just the back box tail pipe thats short so need an aftermarket Chrome Tail Pipe Trim to bring out from the rear bumper.

just a quick note i need same for 2.6 but noticed the 3.0 rear box is cheaper and has twin rear pipes

Just to bump this back up will a 2.6 cat back system fit my 3.0?

Looks the same apart from the 3.0 having a twin pipe silencer, the hangers look the same (looking at the photo).

Both off same year estate cars - 2000 - so will the 2.6 fit on a 3.0?

Post by: omega squared on 05 May 2011, 13:32:05
Just to follow this up

The 2.6 exhaust fitted my 3.0 no problem only difference was visual with it having a single exit tail pipe not twin but fitted fine brackets and mounts were the same.

The 2.6 was a 2002 estate and my car is a 2000 estate 3.0.
