Is this oil too good to be true ?
« on: 18 September 2016, 15:20:10 »

Looking to give the old girl a quick oil change, Genuine GM 10/40 Semi as always  :y

Found this on the bay of the flea http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20LTR-DRUM-10W40-ENGINE-OIL-new-VAUXHALL-GENUINE-SEMI-SYNTHETIC-PETROL-DIESEL-/252529374078?hash=item3acbec737e:g:vh4AAOSwGWNUVLoL  Is it too good to be true ?

Looks like a single 5ltr is £20ish, and given the V6 takes about 5.5 ltrs need 2 x as always  :D

Not sure what a 5ltr one is these days at the Vauxhall stealer dealer ?

Thoughts ?

May just get a 5ltr and 1ltr, and treat to a new filter.  She only does about 1000mls a year, and so not sure it wise to have oil laying around - Does it have a shelf life ?

I got the 5ltr one for £19.99 a good while back. Seems to be genuine, but how would you know?  ::)

If you're a member of an owners club like VDOC the 5l tubs are £14 from autovaux

I'd be wary of anything branded from ebay.  I'd be wary of anything from Autovaux - carefully inspect it when it arrives, as they have a history of sending stuff which isn't what you asked for.

As for shelf life, yes, it does degrade over time, but not enough to worry about - even with low mileage, you still have to change it annually ;).  Actually, if it does short trips, change it far more often than annually, as short journeys make the oil slightly acidic.

I`ve never had a problem with them but when I want something OEM  then I specify exactly what I want.

They do sell a lot of aftermarket parts but they also sell Genuine GM cheaper than the main stealers.
