hi guys,

can anybody here recommend anybody in the beds / herts area that would be worth taking my omega to be looked at?

i really want to get to the root of my cars lumpy idle / possible misfire but right now just don't have the time to get my hands dirty!!

Lumpy idle? Potential 10 minute job!!

Idle control valve at right side of the engine (as you stand looking at it) sticking out of the big silver lump running fore and aft on top of the engine which says 'ecotech' or similar.

remove the electrical connector to the rear - lift the wire and pull plug backwards.

Screwdriver to remove the hoseclip and pull off the hose to the front.

Slip out the silver gubbins from the black rubber holster and the black rubber into the aforesaid silver ecotech thing...

Use copious amounts of carb cleaner down both open ends of the thing you are holding to flush out the crud.

Use a few drops of 3 in one or sewing machine oil into the hole on the side then reassemble, as the Haynes book of lies says, in the reverse order.

Steady idle should be restored.

or not.....

It genuinely is a 10 minute job, no b*ll sh*tt*ng!!

Pull the plus leads to see if there is any oil in the plugwells.

If there is, then continue the earch for someone to work on the car if you do not have the time. Rocker cover gaskets require renewal - more than 10 minutes!!

i've already spoken to theboy... and his tech 2 sorted my cruise out very nicely!!

he's given me the advice to get the breather system checked out...

but i'm in the middle of a house move and work is driving me mad... so i'm thinking about letting somebody else get their hands dirty!!

Clean the throttle body as well - fairly easy to do, just methodical unbolting of bits... ...Auto Addict has done a guide for 2.2, obviously v6 is very different, but should still give you some clues...

May also be worth doing fuel filter (around £7 - £8 and 5mins work) just for the sake of completeness...

No EML light comes on, does it?

It is a lovely car BTW, but I think I've already mentioned that to you

no EML light so far... did the fuel filter around september time so that should be ok...

will take the things you have said on board and ring around a few places... just don't want to take it to a vauxhall dealer...!!!

quick one... how would blocked breathers effect the running of the car...

although i must say that under hard acceleration and high revs there is a noticable 'whistle' from the car... maybe that is pointing to a blocked breather or a broken pipe somewhere sucking in air when it shouldn't be...

i really want to get the old girl running good because i love driving it... does remind me of my old carlton gsi 24v valve days...

update...

had the car looked at... they couldn't find anything wrong with it... although did agree it wasn't running correctly... still they didn't charge me for the work so mustn't grumble...

they suggested i took it to vauxhall as they suspect a coil pack... obviously i won't be doing that...

gonna get theboy to look at fault codes for me some time this week...

anyway... i have briefly looked into new coil packs... however i'm led to understand that there is 3 different types for my car and the vauxhall system won't help even with the chassis number entered... the only way of telling is removing them to look at the part numbers which is a pain...

has anybody else on here had or heard of this problem...

No, there is one for 1-3-5 cylinder bank and one for 2-4-6 cylinder bank, somebody is getting confused with the DIS modules on the 2.5/3.0

to my knowledge, there were 3 different dis packs for the 2.5/3.0 engines, but the 2.6/3.2 lumps use what is effectively a seperate dis pack for each bank (serving 3 spark plugs instead of 6) instead of one plus HT leads to the spark plugs.

Therefore your solution should be easier !!

One thing that does come to mind though, if you remove the breather assembly from the plenum chamber, you have to be careful replacing it as there is a rubber seal shaped like a top-hat that fits into the assembly. I managed to slice through mine when replacing the breather assembly and that resulted in a sucking noise - might be worth checking that?

Out of interest, does the missfire get worse with engine speed or not? I had a lumpy idle on my old omega which was down to leaking cam cover gaskets, one of the spark plug wells was totally submerged in oil !!!!

I only found that out when I took the spark plugs out to check them after the local Vx dealer couldn't find a problem. It was only really missing on idle, seemed OK under power ...

Sorry, I've slept and drank since I last saw it...

I seem to recall not, I think all the misfires I saw at the time (October-ish?) on Silver facelifts were on Rock's car...

Hopefully, should see Effone this week and see whats stored, if anything.

Its got a manual box, so that won't have any effect, but will look in ABS for DTCs as well.

hi folks, sorry for the late reply but i'm so busy at work i don't have my normal amount of surfing time available..!!

thanks to everyone for the info - interesting stuff about the coil packs being for the 2.5 / 3.0 engines... and not the 2.6 / 3.2 -- just goes to show you shouldn't always trust the 'experts' - thanks marks for the prices, it'll let me know what i might be up against... and thanks theboy for the offer of the TC card... may well make use of that...

sounds... the misfire is pretty much the same (if it is indeed, a misfire), from idle throughout the rev range... although i don't really rev much more than 4.5-5k...

haven't had a chance to look at the breather system although the garage assured me all was ok... the way things are right now it's difficult to even find time to open the bonnet...!!!

anyway, i'll keep y'all posted with any news i get...

Ian, if you're still looking for a decent garage to do any work on your Omega I can put you in touch with the one I use as I don't think you're too far away if you're in Bedfordshire. They're an independent but the guy that runs it was formerly with VX and knows Omega's pretty well, also reasonably priced.

OK, looked at Effone's 2.6 MV6 this evening again...

No DTCs in engine or ABS.

Idles pretty good, but slightly erratic (varies between 630 and 670 rpm). You can feel an associated vibration with this ever so slightly.

A vibration can be felt through gearstick - much more than expected.

From idle, increasing the revs slowly, and it picks up as expected. From idle, revving quickly, there is a slight hesitation (not a misfire in my book though).

At around 3500rpm, a whistle is heard....

Definately no misfire in my book (and 2.6/3.2 ECUs do store misfires anyway, and no DTCs stored).

I have suggested a throttle body clean to assist with the slight erratic idle, a breather clean as always worthwhile, changing the 6 plenum O rings as a matter of course, and check for air intake leaks...

Any other ideas?
