as far as im aware my car has NEVER had an engine flush to clear out all the muck since it was made in 1998
my oil change is being done on Tuesday afternoon, what are your thoughts on any type of additive that you put in with an oil change?
i heard that doing an engine oil flush is more trouble than its worth, my village mechanic friend says that he had a few customers who asked him to perform this "which he did" and after doing it, the car did not run as nice as before! in his words "sounded like a bag of bolts" lol

The best way to 'flush' oil is just to change it regular (like initially every 250 miles!).

I wouldn't use chemical flushes unless necessary - and if you do, the 'off the shelf' type are not particularly good.

VX always charge us for flushing with forte when doing the oil change in a service. The combination increases MPG but this is on a diesel. If the system has not had additives/flushing it's sometimes not recommended.

And why are you not doing yourself?

As said many times before, I can show you how to do this - bring it up late one afternoon/early evening!  You pay for the parts (About £15 for the oil, and about £1.50 or £4.50 (depending on type) for the filter).

Then, as well as getting your oil changed, you will know how to do it next time!

From past experience on old cars... many years back ..not the meega.....  flushing can cause more problems not less.

The theory is this .... the old gunge in a sump tends to collect and stick like s*** to a blanket, so is relatively stable, oil changes just leave this gunge in place, relatively inert.

You come along and bung in a flushing compound which starts to eat at the accumulated gunge, so loosening it, some will depart when the flushing oil is drained, but there is a  VERY HIGH CHANCE that some loosened muck remains, or comes loose after, if you get my drift.

This then circulates with the new oil until it finds a nice small oilway to lodge in... now we have a blocked oilway and high wear ... probably not visible as a change (rise) in oil pressure.. even if we had oil pressure gauges .. which we don't...

As already stated .. regular oil changes with decent quality oil will leave the congealed lump alone and avoid these problems.

The ONLY reason im not doing it myself is i have NO jack and NO axle stand
i tried to do it yesterday and i cannot physically fit under my car without hurting myself and my damm back,
my mates Dad runs a coach company in Oxford and gladly offered to do it for me as he owes my dad a BIG FAVOUR  
He also services the bosses mercedes and bmw, aswell as a porsche!
im just glad im getting a bit better by doing the coolant change, lol

none of my business but if its of interest, halfrauds do sell axle stands @£10 plus various jacks also from @£10.

Don't touch additives..... just regular changes with 10/40 semi synth.

i still dont even know IF my rocker gaskets are actually knackered, seems to be ok since i drained the coolant, the smell of burning seems to have calmed down a lot and i havent seen the dreaded "steam" for a few days
infact, looking at my engine yesterday, there was a black pipe touching the silver part of the engine, dont know what you call it! the silver bit thats right in the middle, lol and it dont sem so bad, dont hold me to that! i could be just praying!

I'll give it the once over for you anyway while I'm passing, we can talk about / look at your concerns.

We'll check for leaking camcover gaskets by checking for oil in plug wells and traces around the tops of the cylinder head. If they are shot we will change them (and do breathers), if they are ok, we'll clean the breathers anyway just to be on the safe side.

Assuming no major work is needed, and assuming I'm passing anyway, I'll be more than happy if I go away with a few beers
