Guys - am looking at getting a new Omega in the next 6 - 8 months

i vowed i wouldnt get another one  :-/
but i do like it and apart from changing the battery and the usual service requirements, cambelt, coolant changes, rocker cover gaskets mines been ok

would like all the toys and gadgets on it

what recommendations can you give?
obviously a model that doesnt have the annoying "common" problems from older models, or anything else associated with my 1998 Omega! especially RUST! 

what year model should i be looking at?
would like a 3 litre i reckons, something quiet to drive and smooth, dont really want an Automatic if i can help it, am i looking at the Elite model?
probably need FSH for it aswell, do the later Omegas tend to have much less problems ?

any ideas on what i can get for my car?
probably bugger all?

nope, as mechanically and (mostly) electrically identical.  They do rust less though.

my mates got a VW Golf, only a 1.6 - it`s an S Reg 1998 like mine, done 135000 miles, NOT  one spot of rust on it, how can this be!!  Grrrrrrrr

VAG are good against rust, same about the rest of the car

I think all Vauxhalls from that era are awful for rust, Omegas being the worse

as long as the very latest Omega dont rust, i`d be happy anyway

all cars rust, even aluminium landrovers and galvanised audis. just not necessarily on the bodywork - sometimes in more serious places


facelift bodywork does have bette anti corrosion properties, particularly on door-tops

had this changed by VX before, then within 10 months, its back to this again!
why does it keep coming away?

I assumed that it happened if the rear door was opened when the front door wasn't shut properly. (or the driver was getting out at the same time as the rear passenger).

The trim can bend, then it starts to catch the other door or a post.  If it has recently been replaced, I would suggest damaged parts at fitting or poor fitting

well i suppose, but thats a bit crap if i cant open my drivers door as someones getting out the back at the same time, it seems to catch the drivers door anyway

One of the (few)good things about my Omega,theres vitually no rust on it anywhere.

i wouldnt mind, but mines sat on the drive all bloody week, i wash it once a month and turtle wax it, but i guess you cant help mother nature

There is a nice 2.6 with LPG in the for sale section,if I was buying another one at the moment I would be seriously considering that.

Its no to do with opening doors at same time, its to do with bent strip or poor fitting

Easy for you to say! We get as much rain here in a month as you do in year!
Also our roads are covered in mud and crap which builds up in the arch lips and holds the water, accelerating the rusting process futher :-/

Hmmm don't understand why so much rust.
Mine rusted a little but only on the places where the previous owner damaged the colour (completely scraped it off) and never repaired it. But it is 1999 facelift model so I guess facelift are better protected though

a) our roads are poor
b) the amount of salt the councils use in winter (salt the roads even if there is a hint that there may be ice)
c) Vauxhalls from that era do not appear to have the best anticorrosion
d) UK owners tend to never garage their cars, and use car washes rather than be kind to the car.

Sorry to say, but this sort of rust is in biggest part a fault of owner(s). Yes, Omegas and Vauxhalls in general rust more than some other cars from the same era, but once you see a spot of rust somewhere you should act and not let it get to the stage like in these pictures. It is enough to inspect a car once a year and fix any spots of rust while they are still only minor and when you can easily do it yourself

My old mini facelift (150k) did a fair bit of rusting on the door tops , bottoms, wheelarches and other places.

The replacement facelift is faring better, 120k miles now and only rusting on one wheelarch.

Quite a few odd spots of rust on the body, tiny circles (a few mm) but with spiders web of rust under the surface. I thought stonechips but there is one on the back of the bootlid. Upside is they arent getting any worse.

Oh and the sunroof surround is rusted all over (under the paint) but thats normal they all do that I think.
