My Car Will Not Start DESPARATELY NEED HELP
« on: 06 September 2009, 12:02:10 »

Hi All,
Got in the car this morning and it wouldn't start. It was turning over perfectly but would not fire, not even a splutter. I need the car to be working for tomorrow and have not got a clue what is wrong.
Seemed a bit funny yesterday, had to have a couple of attempts at starting a couple of times.
Is ther a safety fuel cut off switch anywhere, or could it be a relay problem preventing power getting to the ignition?
Would really appreciate any help that I can get.
Thanks, Kieren

Hi, Should have said, I did the paperclip test first thing and the results were 12 and 31 so it didn't really help much.

Still could be crank sensor, they sometimes go without showing a code. Give as much of the crank sensor wiring you can get to a shake and check the plug (near the pass. side at the rear of the plenum and just under the skuttle) is located tightly and no water in it :y

Wasn't surewhich was the crank senser, but I pulled about some wiring under the skuttle. There was one connector that has fallen apart a little bit. Looks like a three pole connector and one end has what looks liike a vacuum hose. But nothing has changed, not sure if I was looking in the right place. :(

Bloke has just been around from the breakdown cover I have. He took off the fuel lines from the engine and got me to turn the engine over, then said that it was the fuel pump. Just then a noise started coming from the engine bay next to where the battery is. He said it was the cooling system, I said it sounds like a faulty relay. We had a look through the manual and couldn't work out which relays were which. Then I said could the problem be that the crank senser is what tells the pump to start pumping........
He says, to be honest mate, I'm not really a mechanic so I couldn't tell you.
That's where we got to >:(
Any ideas? If it is a relay that controlls the fuel pump does anyone know which one it might be?

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1176560725
Hope it helps a bit. take the relays out and check there is no corrosion on the contacts.
also check the fuse it might be knackered.

Thanks mate but I've just been out and had it all in bits. I can hear the fuel system running when I closed the fuel pump relay circuit and I swaped the two relays between the pump circuit and the injection circuit.
Taken the skuttle out and had a poke around behind but still no joy. Doing my head in now.
Which leads me to--- Does the immobiliser cut out the ignition completely or does the starter still work?

Has anybody at all got any other ideas? (That do not involve Torx sockets)
Running out of time and really nood to get running by the time I go to bed.
Thanks for all the help so far. :y :'( :o :-[ [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Crank sensor is always the suspect when they wont go,Unfortunately the only way I know of finding out is to swap with a known good one,not sure if any members near you who might be able to assist. :-/

Thanks, that is the plug that I was playing with, it had fallen apart to a degree and I have put it back together. Is there an easy way of making sure that it is dry?

No, unfortunatly not. Can't find out where the actual crank senser. Might have to get a new one and then find it.
Really hope that is what it is. Running through a bad patch at the minute and have no money to get it sorted.

If you fit a new crank sensor make sure its fitted as per the guide on the forum and not routed as per the original routing. Its the routing of the wiring which kills them, its too close to the exhaust manifold. :y

Thanks mate. Would you believe that I've just found a section of the forum called "Maintainance Guides" that tells me everything that I'll ever need to know. Will be looking for a new senser today and trying to change it.
I'll let you know how I get on. :y

Right, I've been at it this morning and still got problems. Got the new sensor and checked the connector and it looked alright. Got home, took the old one off and then found that it was the wrong one (after stupidly cutting the old cable and then losing it behind the engine).
I took it back to the shop where they had ordered me another one with the round ends. When they took it out of the box it turned out that it was the same. They then got on to Bosch who said that they were all square.
They then looked on the computer for a different type and there was a picture of a different make with the rounded ends on the connector so they went and picked it out and when they opened it, it had the square connector.
They phoned a local Vauxhall garage and they said they didn't know anything about it.
The only thing that I can think of now is to try and find the connector that I have pulled through into the engine and take it to them, or try to doctor the cable, which I can imagine will cause me more problems later.
Any ideas?

is yours like this? sorry its a crappy pic.

If you dont need your car for a few days untill you get the richt one you could try changing the cable :-/

its been asked here a few times if it is possible but no one has tryed it.
cut the cable off both sides fron the sensor and plug with enough cable left to join a new cable
join the plug and sensor with the new cable and try it if your car starts you would be the first person to attempt this and the answer to many a question. and the start for many more

I'll have to go and have another look. Did have a look about changing the cable, might be able to but to get enough slack on the sensor end to cut I ended up pulling the connector down behind the engine. I'll be back shortly. If I can the connector back out then I might have a go at replacing the cable.

The connecter that the sensor connector fits to is the rounder of the two types. Are you familiar with the two different types? It has a pink or orange rubber seal around the centre plastic bit.
As for the sensor connector, I have just tried to put a bending spring around the cable and push it back up and now lost the cut end. So I think that is probably the last that I will be seeing of that. :(
It's all about learning from mistakes.

If anyone is really interested to find out if recabling can be done and has an old damaged sensor then PM me for my address and once I have finally put a new one on and proved that that was what the problem I'll happily recable the damaged one and try it if it means saving people all this. :y
I have little doubt that it will work.

The last one I changed was the rounded edged connector, it was from AutoVaux online, initially I gave my local VX dealer the engine number which said that it was the square one, so, I ordered the wrong one!!!!

When it came it was a Siemens unit......  don't know if that helps any.... DC

The part number for the one that I brought was 0261210131. This is the one that come with the square connector. The one I took off had the same number on though.

Dave C and VX1:
Just looked at the website that Dave C mentioned and the first of the product codes that VX1 gave me brought up the correct connector (according to the picture).
Worryingly though, the part number that I had brought up a picture of the same one [smiley=cry.gif].
I think that my best bet is to order one and put a note in with the order.
Thanks for your help both of you and everyone else :y :y :y

The senser from Autovaux never came, paid for special delivery next day and should have been here Tuesday. It's Saturday and enough is enough so I have been to Slough to pick up the only sensor available in the world to have the right shaped plug in it.
Got back and got under the car (something that I'm always very scared of doing) and put the new sensor into place, screwed up the bolt. Got out, re-routed the cable to keep it away from the manifold. Pluged it in, went to the drivers side turned the key and the enging turned round and round just like before................then started. :D :D :D :D :D
I actually sucessfully fixed a car. :y :y :y :y
I can do just about anything, I own lots of tools and I build lots of things but I have never managed to fix a car before.

I am so very grateful to everybody who contributed to this thread and helped me out with good advice, you have saved me a lot of money and I owe you all a drink.
