a very productive Omega day and Syme is a top geezer!
« on: 26 February 2012, 15:13:00 »

Hi Chaps

Spent 3 hours with Syme today off this forum
He lives in Oxford and fixed my Omega for me
What a top bloke! very knowledgable and really made me appreciate my car again
and I've gained a friend should i start panicking and stressing again

turnt up to his at 11.30am, opened my bonnet, showed him the screeching type noise
1st suspicions were water pump, but turnt out to be the Alternator bearing tension wheel or whatever it is lol
He took an identical one off his old miggie and put it on mine, voila! Noise gone! Purring like a kitten now
also done oil change and filter after I'd bought some oil, well chuffed now!

He very kindly tried to fix the loss of heat problem and it's now become intermittent going hot and cold randomly..... so ive no idea what this trouble is
But the mechanic who bodged it last week BETTER bloody fix it!
i had heat and now I've got it when it feels like it

anyone on here know about the reasons to this type of symptom?

Overall a good day and I paid Syme for his time and effort, a damn site cheaper than a rip off garage

Next job is to buy his HID lamps off him and install em in my car

Pleased to hear you have found somebody who understands these cars, and all about what OOF is about.

Get shot of your "trusted mechanic".Get the money you paid him for the work he now seems not to have done .and put your trust in this forum and its members. :y

i agree!

I've already paid the "trusted tosser" the £349 and I'll let him sort it, otherwise i will be getting some of my money back..

Bearing in mind i did have new HT leads, spark plugs and genuine VX dis pack

£120 of my bill was for labour

If he couldn,t fix it the first time, you may be heading for a whole lot more grief getting him under the bonnet again  >:(

Tell him you will pay for the bits only he fitted at the price he paid ,not the list price he has charged you ,and a FUL refund of the labour.

Mention small claims court/trading standards about charging for sub standard work .He doesn,t seem to understand the workings of an Omega.

The point is, he's cured my pinking of the engine, the EML light no longer comes on
It's just now I've got no heat, how could he have caused this by merely fitting HT Leads, spark plugs and a dis pack?

Just a thought, the heater is controlled by the HBV (Heater By-pass Valve) which is controlled by a small vacuum pipe. Has this been pulled off? May be worth a look because it's all in the same area as the Dis-pack.......

No vac = constant heat ;)

Sounds like he may have damaged the vacuum pipes while doing the work, easily done by a brute.  With the engine on wiggle them about and listen for any sharp intake of air.  Repair or replace the damaged part and you should find it'll work all the time now  :y

Edit:  Scratch that if it would mean constant heat (are you sure?) I wonder if it is the sampling fan?

My HBV was replaced just under 2 years ago, i think it was an aftermarket one
The heat comes on intermittently
If I press the 2 buttons to do that Reset thingy
(pressing the Auto and off at the same time)
i then lose the heat that's suddenly started working!
then I get the Coolish type air return again

it's driving me nuts not knowing exactly what the problem is

Pull vac pipe from top of HBV and plug it, if you then have constant heat it`s a dodgy HBV

Thanks Syme ;)

I think I'll be doing that very soon
Just took my missus back home and my car is absolutely flying!
It's never driven so good! mind you, it's bloody freezing with no heat
What are you up to next Sunday by chance?

thinking about the potential HBV problem
doesn't it obviously need all the vac pipes to be connected to the right ends?
there's loads of them ain't there?

2nd paragraph is a bit OTT Wayne. From my memory you`ve been offered plenty of help and advice during your membership here ???

i think it was, all I get is knocked on here
I'd rather pay someone off of a forum instead of undoing screws and bolts and completely rather things up
