camera help please asap

going on holiday tomorrow night and know nothing about cameras but my mates lent me a good camera its a cannon 400 ive had it a week and been practising and getting some good results.so today I went and bought a 8gb sd card so I had my own.took his 2gb one out and but mine in switched the camera on and the display says error cf card fault.so took it out  and but the old one back in and it also says cf card fault.
what have ive done wrong?
only used a point and shoot before

Might need to format the new card. Under settings.

The Canon 400D uses CF cards not SD cards! :y

oh dear I think ive found the fault and its all my fault :'(

there seams to be some pins where the card locates and it looks like somehow ive bent one in the middle

think I need to get it repaired but that's not going to happen before we go away

no one to blame apart from me

I doubt whether you put an SD card in a slot meant for a CF card - it won't fit!
I'm guessing that you have got your terminology confused.
You CAN get an adaptor that will allow you to use the larger capacity SD cards in your camera's slot, but check with the camera's maximum handling capability first.
Don't forget to take the battery charger with you, and a spare battery if you have one - and enjoy your holiday!

You posted about the bent pins whilst I was answering you - you really did try to insert an SD card in there!
The many pins in the CF cards are quite delicate, but someone with a steady hand and a very fine screwdriver might be able to tease them straight for you. Let's hope so, because a professional repairer will do the sucking in of breath and shaking of the head whilst eyeing up your wallet.....

no it was a cf card I just wrote it wrong
think it needs to be repaired right as ive been lent it in good faith and don't want to give it back with a bodge repair
