Omega General Help / Re: Calling all experienced V6 owners...
« on: 28 January 2012, 21:32:04 »
Andy, wouldn't I see that from watching underneath the car for 20 minutes after a long run?
No water loss is apparent - anywhere.
Unless the GM V6 unit is truly unique in some characteristics, my experience of HG failure on other vehicles is totally unmistakeable - no way could you drive the car another mile, let alone hundreds of miles.
Emulsification in the filler neck does bother me, but my Veccy B 2.2 did just the same - that definitely did NOT have HG failure, but DID have weeping at the core plug - could it be this?

Thanks for your suggestions so far guys - I'll check em all out.

If its HBV (which from all that's been said so far and from my experience of similar threads on here, seems most likely), where would the tell-tale be? Where is the water?
Show me the water!!

So, even were it to be passenger side HG, I could in theory just go on replenning the coolant until such time as the coolant loss became too great and rendered the car impractical to use?
Where is the water going with HBV failure?
Nothing drops from under the car - I've watched for fully 20 minutes - all seems water-tight.
I just need to know how to rule one diagnosis out in favour of another....

Were it TB's worst case scenario of passenger side HG, surely performance would noticeably suffer? If an HG goes, it goes, right? It doesn't go by degrees?
HBV - total bitch of a job??

I'm a little puzzled, but I'm certain that this what I'm about to report will be common to some of you, so I'm seeking consensus on my apparent coolant problem...
Here's the physical symptoms:- "loses" approx 3 pints of coolant every 100 miles or so. Emulsification in oil filler neck. "dipped" oil shows no signs of water/oil mix. Engine temperature never rises above 'normal', according to the gauge, anyway. Does smell a bit 'hot' on parking it up after a longish run - more than 20 miles or so. No loss of performance whatsoever.
What have I got, chaps?
Car is 2000 f/l 3.0 V6 Elite, completely standard.

Pete, you need to assume a high level of mechanical ignorance from me, I'm afraid!

Where is the adjuster mechanism, and how would I know if it was actually stuck?

Cheers mate!

Thanks for all your useful advice, everybody.

So if I just pull it, replace it and leave it, what level of hydraulic assistance will i be losing, and will it start bottoming out over severe dips and speed bumps?

Don't get me wrong, I WILL get it properly sorted, just can't do it just yet....

My self-levelling has gone awry  >:(

Handling, never all that sparkling on this big heavy car, now absolutely horrible.
Think the pump was working before I pulled fuze 27, but it's made no difference - still sitting up at the back like its had a badly-repaired shunt  :(
Pump failure?
Can the car be somehow manually wound back down?
What's the worst case scenario financially at a decent independent?

Cheers for any and all advice, chaps and chapesses.

As a guide for you, I was charged £26 by my local VX dealer back in November last year.... :(

If it's a 2000 modle it should have a NCDC2013/15 in the car with sat-nav.
Just for the record, my 2000 3.0 Elite (first regd Apr 2000) has the CCR2006 unit without satnav. Don't know when the crossover date would therefore be to the NCDC2013/15.

The fuel economy etc is the big issue but my mileage and haphazard use i think will make it a reasonably sensible option !! especially to get the car i have always wanted.

Driven sensibly, 28 mpg is very achievable.
However, driving them sensibly is nowhere near as much fun as hooning around in them, so that point is a largely academic one  ;D
When you buy it (lets face it, you've already bought it in your head  ;)), be sure to post up some pics in the Gallery... :)

Someone else of considerably more knowledge than me will surely answer your query about Bose functionality and repairability shortly, but if the playing fault is intermittent, it may well be that previous owners have habitually played rewritable CD's - it is known that this is always bad news for these units, as it knackers the lasers.

Sounds like you'd be better off sourcing a good S/H unit, tbh.... ;)

The plastic covers on the parcel-shelf speakers will also carry an embossed 'Bose'.

Nigh on impossible for even a well tooled-up and capable DIY'er to eradicate rust for a significant period of time and achieve a subsequent good paint finish, so unless you or any of your friends are professional body-shoppers, its a job for the pros (and swallow hard for the cost  ::))

You obviously love your car, but now is really the 'acid test' - any strong money spent on the cosmetic appearance of almost any Omega is going to be 'dead' money - you'll never get it back when / if you sell it, so - what's it to be?
D'ya love it enough to keep it tip-top (almost) regardless of cost?

Its the exact same conundrum I'm wrestling with - mine is very solid, there is no rust visible anywhere, and is in pretty good shape paint wise. It does however have minor scuffs and dings, and they irritate me. There's no point in my aiming for concours condition, because it's a used every day car kept overnight on the street, but I DO want it to be better than it is - because it has pearlescent paint, it won't be easy to 'match' it if taken on piecemeal, but a full respray will be way more than the car is 'worth'.

Thing is tho - I absolutely love the thing! (and I'm (very probably) gonna spend the silly money!)  :)

Very tidy looking car, btw - bit too strong at £850 tho?

Whats it really worth? £750?
