Omega General Help / Re: Sorry, but the scuttle guide is useless.

Wow. Some old names in this thread.
Well, it is 12 years old ;D
I suppose I will just be a man and measure the hole and stick anything in it that wouldn's be very painful to my 17 years old (Cadillac Catera - a sister of your Omega B).  :D

Blimey its cold out :(

Right, mine is T-25 for the screw.

I've given you a bum stear - the slot needs to be perpendicular to windscreen base, parallel is the locked position. Sorry.

Here is piccie of the plastic bit...

and it fits in this kind of slot...

Are the plastic bits that secure the scuttle available from anywhere or is there a part number? Most of mine are missing or have stripped the tops making it hard if not impossible to turn. I suppose one could Mcgyer it with other type of newer push through fasteners. Any suggestions there! Thank you.

Since I need a basic drive around and I have been familiar with the Catera/Omega B for the past twelve years; I looked around for a used vehicle like the one that died.

I had a bit of luck in acquiring one today. It is the 2001 Cadillac Catera Sport model. It has only 101,000 Km versus the one I killled with 253,000 Km on it. So basically I am back on with "Catera/Omeg B" setup. Hopefully I will not create more mistakes like the last one. What a way to learn!  But I suppose cars do eventually die due to poor service, nature or servicing mistakes. So not bad for me to  carry a Cadillac Catera from 64,000 (km) at purchase to the eventual 253,000 Km.

I will be scarpping the dead Catera over the next 4-6 weeks and scavenge it for some parts and spares before I let go. My thoughts are to keep some good sensors, relays, ECU, valve covers, coil packs, breather and associated assmebly, timing cover, emission pump and associated steel piping used on cold starts, cooling fans, brand new Battery, door electronic controls, and some other little things. I cannot keep any big parts as the house garage is already pretty cluttered.

Dr. Gollum I thank you for suggesting and searching for possible solutions.  Same for other great members on this forum. However, I am becoming little older and have been really trying to make do with highly unprofessional rinky/dinky quality tools versus what I do believe some of the senior members on this forum have access to.

Going forward any suggestions regarding the following;

- The working car I have now (2001 Cadillac Catera Sports) is using fully synthetic oil per th elast owner. Any good recommendations if I should be using fully synthetic 0W40 or any other grade Synthetic.
- Any specific areas for care and cleaning that I should watch for beyond oil changes and air filters for my working Catera.
- I got only one Key and one FOB opener with the replacement Catera; how can create a second spear Fob and key economically?
- Any ideas on which part(s) I should try to keep for spare from the dead Catera before getting rid of it for scrapping.

Thank you all.

It died on the highway. Such a wonderful car as long it lasted and it grew on me. So sad.

I wish Dr. Gollum was wrong in the prediction, but he is realistic and was right whereas I was wishful.

Again, thanks everyone for the suggestions and help.

Many best wishes to all for the New Year.

Friends I much appreciate the great suggestions and wisdom on this board.

So I was in a Kamikaze or Hail Mary situation. So I have done the following and the results;

1. I got the filter and oil out. I tried to suck through the filter hole and some oil came out and otherwise no objects.

2. I was thinking to get a more cold weather liquid oil to see if things will get shifted around and hopefully dislodge if in smaller pieces. I know for this step you will all throw bricks and jests at me. I got 5L of 0W20 Synthetic oil and added about one litre of Motormedic Motor Flush (made by GUNK people) and idled for approximately 5 minutes. I removed the resulting oil and the filter.

3. I installed a fresh filter (correctly  ::)) and 5L of 0W20. I went for a spin and it is still cold out here (-9 celsius, not too bad) both on the roads and the highway. She was acting little funny as to be racing but I am trying to fix her EBTCM module too with "VSS Speed Sensor A" issues as I have no speedometer or odometer. I used the GPS for speed so did 100 Km/h plus and other speeds.  In steady speed cruising she was as though nothing happened. The noise is much gone and not there at all on idle. When starting from a stop light I did seem to feel that the engine tries to race/whine a bit. But I have only done about 30 Km or so. When I came home and listened to the car idling, it was as like before and nicely purring along.

However, the proof is in the pudding but the pudding is not fully cooked yet. Time will tell sooner or later but after I fix the EBTCM (i.e. if the car is still alive over the next two weeks) it may resolve some shifting and such issues. I will know then if damage became chronic or if I had been lucky to get lesser damage. In spite of everything, she is already 253,000 plus Km in age and has served me very well.

I will for sure update in case it may help someone.

Regards.

I think I would drop the oil pan and hope to find the remains in the oil pump.
I would probably be looking for a replacement lump...

Pontiac Transport of 98-03 vintage uses the same basic lump :y
Doctor would trying to suck through the filter hole with a shop vac be of any benefit!

I cannot put another engine this car as it is already 16 years old and not many people know much about these cars around here. But had before this, it has  been exceptionally well running. So any or all out of the box ideas you may have!

Thank you!

Should I just try to drain oil as there is definitely a blockage and would changing oil cause the blockage to dislodge. Should I try to pump air into the filter hole and would that be of any benefit? Obviously I am just lost.

I thank you and if nothing in the pan then I suppose I am screwed!

The oil filter rubber gasket and the small bag it came in I left in the filter and it got sucked into the system. I feel so stupid. Usually these filters come with the gasket outside and I thought the filter was missing the gasket and did not look inside the filter hole as these were stuffed in there as I was just trying to redo the oil change thinking the last oil change had issues and noticed in the new filter that I just opened. Now rattling and chattering! What to do!

Would it have been shredded and now blocking the pickup tube or it got buried inside the engine. The oil pressure appears to be extraordinarily high but not outside of the gauge range.

See the associated post about chattering.

Should I drop the oil pan and see if the pickup tube has the remnants and the blockage? Is there salvation and what is the best possible outcome and the worst and any next steps?

Thanks.

It was very cold during the last week here in Toronto. I started my car I heard chattering sound. It decreased a bit the first day and now has gotten much worse that I am fearful of taking it on the road. It is still very cold.

I recently changed car oil and added GM Engine Oil Supplement. The oil pressure indicates very high oil pressure that stays mostly very high as the coolant stays at 1/4 setting of the dial even after extended driving during the past two days.

I was thinking of taking apart and cleaning the breathers as the Cam gaskets areas is wet with oil but not profusely. It appears the Cam area is starved or the Cam Cover gaskets are blown and I was also getting some burnt oil smell inside the car. There are no codes either pending or set.

I do have spare cam cover gaskets that are available to me as well as the other general gaskets for the plenum, etc.

Should I just get rid of the recent oil that I added may be it has become too thickened to do proper lubrication considering -18/-20 Celsius temperatures spell.

I searched under "loud chattering" but have not successfully found other posts.

Any advice/guidance is much appreciated.

Could you clarify the coolant strength versus fan operation for me, please?
Do the fans come on more or less as coolant strength increases?

Ron.
Ron I know the fans are not activated by coolant strength.

However the time it takes to reach the trigger point for activation of fans is related to efficiency of cooling and also to the heat carrying and transfer capacities of the coolant as it circulates. What I noticed in my car was that I had proper Dexcool mixture at one time. I flushed it and for replacement I used Prestone Orange Dexcool compatible coolant. In this situation I was reaching the trigger point for cooling fans much faster and quite frequently. However I never had a a boil-over or steam-over.

I hope that clarifies my comment or post and answers your question.

Regards.

Fuse19 and AndyH Sirs; I am a poor North American trying to speak Technical Language of UK, the fatherland/motherland/sisterland/brotherland  of the Catera.

Please recognize my errors as follows;

1. When I said GEARBOX I meant what we call Differential in the rear to which is connected the drive shaft coming out of the Transmission (your language Gearbox) out of each each of the rear drive axles come out. So I am looking at the correct area just did not describe in correct European language.

A text diagram below;

Engine -----> Gearbox (Transmission)-----> Differential -VSS----->Wheel

On the Catera the VSS picks up from the left Rear wheel drive axle. The pigtail of this is in-tact but past the pigtail connector to the main ABS cable going towards the front, the cable is ripped about 12" away from the continuing cable and pigtail connector connection. It is this cable that I want to know about. I wish I had taken a picture but the Mechanic wanted me away from the hoist when he raised the car. It is a new shop that I went to for the first time. Once my back is a little better I believe I can repair it but Fuse19 suggested I should replace it. I don't know the part number and it does not appear generally available for me.

Hence my request for help.

Regards and apologies for the confusion.

PS: Can the Mod please correct the thread subject line from Gearbox to Differential or the right name! I will appreciate it.

Anyone has picture(s) or part number for a wiring harness that connects the two gearbox speed sensors on Catera (2000 Omega pre face-lift) to the ABS ECU/EBTCM! I don't have easy access to a hoist that often unless I visit a shop. I believe it is a single cable that splits into two near the gear box where pigtail connectors from the sensor are latched/inserted into th eplugs of this cable. Mine was either eaten by the black squirrels or damaged by road hazard(s).

If you can suggest a place to purchase used or new I will appreciate too.

Thank you.

PS: It relates to my other thread as well http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=141328.0

Check if the following may point to something;

A. Are the Auxilliary radiator cooling fans coming on when needed (search for a document on this forum on how to test the proper relay operation)

Note:  If possible make sure that you keep the coolant strength up to par while replenshing with de-mineralized water or distilled water. Various coolant strengths will affect how much the cooling fans are needed and how often these come on-off.

Good luck

Thank you for the response. I thought so too. I looked for it on eBay but could not find it. So the cable is not the one that connects as a pigtail/small extension to the sensor at the gearbox but the one that goes from the pigtail connector to the engine area. I don't know how it is routed and where it gets connected upstream towards the ABS ECU.

Is there a part number that you can flag for me? I live in Canada and have bought stuff for this derivative of the Opel Omega 2000 version from all over the place and have been trying to keep it going. Some people in UK have been very reasonable to ship to me with reasonable P&P. .

I originally bought it when it had 64 thousand kilometers on it. Now it has in excess of 253 thousand kilometers. Still drives lovely.

Thank you
