Must have been about 30years ago, I was in the Glasgow OTC. They put me through my driving training and test, in an Army Landrover ;D. as the gearbox was non-syncro, you had to double de-clutch up and down the box ;D  Great fun driving around Glasgow in a Landrover with 1/2" thick steel bumpers and L plates ;D

Ditto mate. Army landrover about 35 years ago ;)

I took my test in my girlfreinds 1967 Triumph Herald. When the examinare asked me to turn the car around in a narrow road using forward and reverse gears I thought to myself what a waste of time with a 23 feet turning circle the car could do it in a u turn ::)

Unreal!!!

I took my test on 6 November 1979 in a 1967 triumph Herald 1200 saloon. I also did a U-turn, and then got taken into Boston's narrowest street where I did a 29 point turn!

Early/mid 1970's, official paid for lessons in the all new Austin All Aggro with the famous square steering wheel.

Unofficial lessons and subsequent test pass in dads Austin Cambridge - the posh two tone A60 version, not the plain jane A55 Farina.

Seized it a year later giving it b*lls out down from Dundee after visiting my now wife at College....

Oh, how he laughed.....    NOT!   ;)

Learned to drive a little Fordson tractor and also a Landmaster at my school chums farm then progressed to getting dads car out of the garage when it was wanted for an outing (or mending). Took my test just after my 17th in a Zephyr 6 Low line, 2553 cc, 4 speed column change.
First car of my own was a Ford E93A sidevalve but after my seat fell through the floor due to woodworm  :o (plywood floors) it was replaced with the first of several Imps.

Correction - I first drove FIAT tractors when I was 16-17 and working during the summer at a FIAT tractor dealership. Also drove some of the very big Alis Chalmers diggers  :)

No license was required as it was not on public roads, but only in the garage storage area and grounds (which were huge).

I then learnt that diesel engines don't need a battery to run.. once you start it (you'll need the battery for the glow plug to work) it will work even if you remove the key from the ignition, to kill the engine you simply cut the fuel.
