General Car Chat / Cornwall trip..
« on: 23 October 2010, 00:48:18 »
Porth Leven and back in a day is a ball ache....

unable to time return journey as it involved a second client visit in exeter as well....  but 3 hours 50 from esso garage by the ice rink in centre of oxford, to client's front door in porthleven

(5.10 am start, 9.am arrival)

not as bad as i feared, but i'm truly knackered now....  just got back, having a brew before bed to get the white lines out from behind my eyes....

Mv6 behaved very well, £56 in fuel each way...      bit bouncy, reckon new shocks are on the cards...     and definitely definitely want new front discs....

(and an HBV )

General Car Chat / My Elite Estate's Future...
« on: 18 October 2010, 18:31:42 »
so, I'm pondering the fate of the Elite estate....

is it worth taking up to Daz, Lee or Pete, sorting all the bits out in one go, and then selling it on?  i'd need to work out how much a fully sorted, fully kitted out, all working ,  99 V reg , 3.0 MFL Elite estate can go for with 150K + on it

or do i move it on as a project car to someone??     do people really still want to do that at this time of year?    ... in which case, what range would be a fair price for it....

just considering my options here really.....   although there's a large part of me that fancies having both fully up to scratch and being beautiful, i really truly cannot justify it....     try as i might....       even given the very reasonable Admiral multi car quote....

one thing i won;t do , is break it myself, or scrap it....   i don;t have the space for it, or the tools.   and it's too damn nice for the scrappy.

it's a toughy....   i'm a bit sentimental about these things really.... but i'm not an eccentric millionaire, so at some point, bullets must be bitten....

any thought chaps..?

General Car Chat / Miggy Alternatives???
« on: 06 October 2010, 18:12:11 »
right.....  this month looks like it's gonna be busy as all hell,  i'm working all over the place, literally...   5 days in Glasgow, 2 weeks in oxford, 2 days near Falmouth, 2 days in Exeter, 2 days in London.....

the upshot of it all is that towards the tail end, probably around the 20th-21st i'm gonna need to GET a car....  coz it's either that or spend another bloody fortune on my much loved, but aged, and worn out Elite Estate...

well, I say worn out.....   actually she's not THAT bad....  but i have to draw a line somewhere....  or i'll continue sinking more and more money into garage bills..

exhaust manifold gaskets,   new front disks,  pads all round, new rear bumper,  a few rust spots....   the suspension is starting to feel a bit softer than it ought,   the list goes on,   none of them need necessarily be car killers on their own, but cumulatively, they add up to the cost of a lower mileage replacement.....
(to those of us without the tools, or physical robustness , or time, to spend a week crawling around in the cold & damp , then a week laid up in traction....  )

some of you may remember, i've already been in this position this year, in January, she had a new Exhaust, cam covers, cam cover gaskets, cam belt,  and what not... totaling about £1500 in bills.

i'm determined not to be in the same boat again....

at the time, there was only one v6 Miggy elite estate for sale in the UK....   a green one , with a dodgy front end repair  (no headlight washers fitted )

and so i blew the money fixing  the current car up....

this time i'm absolutely determined not to end up in the same boat.

so....   current cash flow projection says i'll have maybe £2500 in cash, at the back end of the month.....     spare (after allowing for paying all the bills this month, and shopping and so on)

While my dream car ,  currently at Josh's , is still out of my reach,  if i don;t buy something i'm going to HAVE to blow it all on this one AGAIN...  and gawd knows what else will break in another 3 weeks....

SO

what else is there, realistically, that falls in budget,  with similar load carrying capacity, and comfort??   with decent reliability, and not astronomical servicing costs.

???????????????

and if any one wants to play Spot the bargain Miggy, i'd be grateful.....

last month i spotted one, in autotrader, for about £1850, ...   late plate, sub 100K miles, black elite estate.....   with all relevant toys.
...   but was about £500 short on being able to just go buy it....  and i will NOT get a loan out ....   if i can;t pay cash, i ain t buying it...

General Car Chat / buying help needed....
« on: 08 October 2010, 09:34:02 »
anyone who knows facelift 3.2's inside out free this weekend to take a trip?

i just found a 3.2 estate in Epping.....

with everything i need already on it.....

Y plate.

121,300 on the clock.   and what sounds like a full service history.

at £1295

already know it's about due a cam-belt,

seller has almost perfect feedback, in large numbers...

have agreed sale in principle subject to inspection and paperwork.

and they're fine with it being rejected if on inspection it fails to live up to it's advert, or be deemed a good un.

obviously i'd cover expenses, a meal, and a case of beer in the way of thanks....

ideally , someone with the ability to use/borrow a reader to check the car's memory etc....   just to be safe....

and then i'll get one of you experts to do the cambelt .....

(it's done about 34,000 on current cambelt,)

it's in Epping.

i'm in Oxford.

I know it's short notice....  and a bit cheek frankly....   but ANYONE???

i'd be relatively happy looking at a minifacelift 3.0 on my own, i've experienced enough faults to have a clue....    8-)     but i know ZIP about facelifts and 3.2's

entering james cagney yankee drawl mode...

I'm a begging youse guys.....   don;t make me crawl......  :y

JC mode disengaged....

Jon Oliva's Pain.     damn fine stuff.....      (been a long time Savatage and Trans siberian Orchestra fan any how)

(it's a bit metal for some people, but melodically so.....   great riffs, great guitar playing, and nice harmonic structures and progressions.....   and yes, i'm partial to some metal, as well as  blues, classical, and traditional folk stuff....   )

General Discussion Area / Thank you josh!!!!!
« on: 09 October 2010, 19:41:09 »
and sorry Pedro....

I now own a 3.2 Mv6 facelift estate in silver...

with the cleanest damn bodywork i've ever seen on a car 9 years old, or indeed 5 years old....  1 small scratch on the tailgate , one loose reflector lens ,   a tiny hint under the rear wiper....   but literally a smidgeon...

there are other faults...  but on a  car this clean it's worth sorting them out.

rocker cover gaskets. & bolt o rings
wishbone or drop link....   or both need sorting..
probably a bush or two at the rear.

needs new rear discs for sure, maybe fronts...

and a cambelt change is due in the next 6000 miles....    sooner rather than later for my conscience.

and the stereo faceplate is loose, and the CDC case won;t eject.

sat nav is tempermental, but gonna change the aerial tomorrow to see if it makes any difference...     it does work though.....

1 bulb behind the half height GID.

and the passenger front seat height adjustment appears to be stuck fully up.

....  there's also something very weird in the rear quarter panel interior, that i think relates to some air based suspension adjustment or reinforcement for towing  (oh yes, it has a full on shin breaker)

air con needs regassed as well

i know Pedro's Mv6 had most of this sorted already, but you HAVE to see how clean and tidy the body on this thing is..... and it's 25K lower miles....

I'd like to talk to Daz and Pete and anyone else who can do this stuff at sensible costs  about getting g ALL the jobs done ASAP.    then i'll see what to do with the Elite...   if anyone wants a project maybe...   or do it back up to spec and have 2 miggy estates ....

it's SO PRETTY!!!!!

General Discussion Area / recommendations for insurance????
« on: 08 October 2010, 11:47:34 »
just got a quote from my insurers (Bell Direct) to change over to a 3.2 MV6 from my 3.0 Elite...

(estate)

and additional £116 for the remainder of my policy

and the usual suspects (go compare, compare the meerkat, and confused ) are all quoting similar as lowest prices...   starting at about £450 for crappy cover and no glass cover....   £500 seems to be abut average for the sensible budget covers....

Direct line want £742 !!!

WTF??????

bearing in mind i've been paying £360 on the 3.0 elite.....

45 Yr old married male, , 1 SP30 (Nov 2007) full no claims....   not unreasonable postcode.....

jeeezus...

i was expecting a small difference perhaps.... but this????

i bit OT, but i know some of you out there are in to this arcane branch of wizadry.....

My Son, twit that he is, has left it to the last minute to finish one of his college assignments... and he finds that his action scripts aren't working...

he's using CS4 i think at college, what he needs is some clever bugger to tell him where he's screwed up (technically that is, i'm already quite capable of telling him about time management and paying attention to deadlines forthcoming, and my thoughts on media courses in general  )

I've never worked with flash .... and my coding experience is over 20 years ago now... and irrelevant.

anyone out there able to help?

here's the kicker.... his deadline is tomorrow 5pm... so he needs to mail someone his code tonight and get it looked at. i guess.

sometimes i despair of the youth of today, and now you know why

if anyone kindly disposed towards the twit can email him an offer of assistance,

hoggy_bear**a-t**live.com

coz this old fart is out playing in a metal band tonight.....

thanks a bazillion to anyone that rescues him.

A Black, Elite V6 TURBO estate

i kid you not....  it had a REAL turbo under the bonnet...

but a bust water hose....or soemthing similar, at the rear of the engine,   he was waiting for the RAC recovery man at our local sainsbury, on the oxford ring road....  apparently lives out near chipping norton somewhere...    plans to use it for drifting .....    been having misfire troubles , had seemed to get it sorted, but then a hose or o ring seems to have failed and dumped his coolant on the ring road....

i pointed him at the forum.....

apparently if he can't get the turbo lump sorted, he's going to V8 it....

mad, but oooh so VERY cool !
