General Discussion Area / Delivery woes
« on: 03 December 2019, 18:19:46 »
Haven’t had a good year so far with deliveries.

Earlier in Spring we posted two parcels to Australia that took three attempts to get there and took over three months.

Last week it took 50 hours for a parcel showed out for delivery to do the 2 and a half hour journey from Seville.

Sent a jigsaw to relatives in Western Australia. The seller neglected to put either Perth or Western Australia on the package just the postcode and suburb.

This week takes the biscuit. My 93 year old dad is a bit under the weather. So we got a supermarket to deliver some ready prepared meals. Instructions clearly said use back door. So yesterday used front door with no reply as he is deaf. In fairness the supermarket rebooked delivery for today  and......the driver did the same thing. No problem though as my dad sat at front door just in case.

Today was his birthday. We sent him a present and were really impressed to find an email early today saying track your parcel here.  Even said the hour slot.  However didn’t get updated as later we found the drivers device wasnt working.  So rang the courier to find it had been delivered.

So spent next forty minutes ringing my dad.  Eventually the postman shouted to him, your phone is ringing.    Dad, there is a parcel outside front door. Goes and has a good look. No there isn’t. It has been stolen.

Potted version as you can imagine.

General Discussion Area / Sir Keir Starmer
« on: 27 November 2019, 12:42:10 »
Anyone seen him , or Rebecca Long Bailey for that matter, on TV recently?

I am thinking he is waiting for Corbyn and momentum to crash and burn at the election and then step in as new leader and in Rebecca’s case , cabinet member .

Regardless of your politics, I always thought Keir Starmer was more of a leader than Corbyn or McDonnell for that matter.

General Discussion Area / Single use subs drugs trade
« on: 26 November 2019, 17:34:21 »
Anyone been following the latest twist in the drugs trade into Spain and then rest of Europe?

The police have seized 3000 kg of top quality cocaine that arrived by home made 22 metre long sub  that has come from South America with a two or three man crew.

The suspicion is that the sub at the end of its voyage is scuppered after the crew and drugs are unloaded. Single use submarine , each costing £1.5 million. The seabed off Galicia might be littered with them! Cant post the link but search Elpais in english  drug trade. Will get you there.

About ten years ago a drugs gang built a sub in Andalucia and then transported it by road to Galicia for accepting drugs from ships offshore. They must have been naffed off when the police nabbed it.

Tourists regularly film what looks like holiday makers having fun arriving at high speed in small boats with many outboard motors to outrun anything the police have. They then nonchalantly unload drugs from Africa and drive off.

Drugs is big business!

General Discussion Area / Spend your Brexit dividend?
« on: 21 November 2019, 13:11:23 »
I know we are all fed up of the B word but how are you going to spend your Brexit dividend? There seems to be one coming regardless of whether we leave or remain.

So, my plan is

To raise my minimum wage and reduce my tax bill.
Invest in a green USA private health plan
Free green internet
Upgrade the car to green electric Mustang using the extra income from new minimum wage
Free upgrade of house electrics and supply. Green of course
Plant some green trees ( they will be olive trees of course)
Windfall tax on my next door neighbour because he looks like he has more money than me

I think that is it, real change.

What are you going to spend yours on?

General Discussion Area / More trees
« on: 16 November 2019, 20:37:20 »
What do you think to more trees?

Political parties are promising more planting.

I have thought we need more trees for years.  I hope they don't convert farmland but instead look for open space trees in built up areas or heathland. I would agree that some trees in streets cause problems. Fallen leaves or sap .

Whete do you think 60 million should go?

General Discussion Area / VPN again
« on: 14 November 2019, 23:24:17 »
I need an SSL VPN apparently.

My Satellite modem went faulty and when fixed will no longer have a UK IP address. I understand the reasons why..

However I will no longer be able to download UK TV , like BBC iplayer.

Provider says I need a SSL VPN  on my Linksys E1200 router.

Any recommendations please? Dont mind paying  but see below. Sorry for another VPN thread after the Nord zvPN thread last week.

I will also be looking at rural Unlimited SIM based internet soon now I have lost the UK I P address so will need a VPN on that too.when I ditch the satellite.

Could it be that cars and cows are not the whole problem.?

Everyone has a computer generating heat and powered by electricity.

Everyone is taking millions of photos all stored in something called the icloud, one drive or similar. Those servers must really be kicking out some heat.

Just a thought

Strange race.

Ferrari looked competitive in quali. Then just faded away or in Vettels case lacked grip and then his suspension gave up maybe from running wide over the rumble strips. I wonder if there is any truth in the rumour Ferrari had oil bleeding into the engine to increase power?

Hamilton drove a great race. He could just have cruised round to fifth but instead tried to win. How good is it that a Brit is world champion.

Sky news have an interesting news item about this potentially lethal drug that is popular in the USA.

50 times more potent than heroin.

Around 50,000 deaths. Pop star Prince included.

General Discussion Area / Britains EU Commisioner
« on: 02 November 2019, 23:49:56 »
We didnt need one when we were leaving by 31st October.

Now we haven't left we are still members and crucially will be paying the 250 million a week net ( hardly dare say it but 350 million a week as will the EU be giving Britain anything between Nov 1st and this unicorn date of leaving.? I suspect not)

So methinks Britain needs to appoint an EU commissioner to represent British interests and report back what they are up to.

I suggest Sir Tigger for the job. Bring an air of respectability plus represent the people.

General Car Chat / How is this for service?
« on: 31 October 2019, 14:09:42 »
My 4x4 ate its oil cooler a few weeks back. For a while before that the EML came on intermittently ending up being on all the time. I thought it might be the EGR valve.

Got the oil cooler fixed. Car going alright so took it to an excellent local auto electrician. He read the codes while I was there. He checked numerous electrical connections, fuses etc. Five stored codes. Leave it with me for a couple of days.

Went today today to collect it. No EML light staying on, car running fine. No charge. He cleared the codes with a Peugeot reader and as he hadn't "done any work" no charge.  If it comes back on, pop back and I will have another look.

Could be either garage made good a duff connection during their activities.

If it stays away, I shall take him a bottle of something.

German farmers take country to court over climate change ruining their farming.

What next V8 owners take government to court over spoiling their driving with high fuel prices?

As has been said before, we can expect  government by courts.

Good race.

There will be some strategist jobs vacant at some of the teams. Maybe it was the altitude. Oh and the pit stops.

This is the next date to look forward to. Think 75.

Could be the date we leave the EU or the date we rejoin having never left.

Either way Priti Patel has sorted an extra hour on pub opening times ;D

General Discussion Area / Smart motorways to be reviewed
« on: 24 October 2019, 17:43:43 »
I remember us having a thread on Smart motorways some time ago .

Seems there has been too many deaths on the hard shoulder that doesn't exist.

Anyone else feel vulnerable driving on a motorway without a hard shoulder?
