Renault Traffic Gearbox Problem
« on: 01 June 2012, 01:01:01 »

A friend has a 2002 Renault Traffic 1.9/2.0? SL27DCI and first gear has gone. Apparently this is a common problem

He has been quoted £700 for a reconditioned gearbox with 12 months warranty, plus £250 for fitting.

Has anybody got any suggestions for fixing it more cheaply?

Renault trafic/Vauxhall Vivaro/Nissan Primestar betweeen 2001 - 2011 Have a problem with there Gearbox to much weight and too much torque going into a light commercial gearbox terrible design, but as far as im aware there is no modification its only in the last two years Renault have held there hands up and recalled/replaced the gearbox on there latest model,

You can either replace and throw away, or like most Pre-facelift Trafic owners get a scrappy one and when you can afford it get the one thats in it at present rebuilt for when it goes again  :-\

Try and find a good one from a scrappy, and find a cheaper place to fit it. You get people who say there's nothing wrong with the gearboxes on them, they're talking utter rubbish they have a problem, a friend of mine has had three gearboxes in his 54 place tragic and he's covered 138,000 miles. It's a shame because they're good vans, they're comfy, they go well, they look good and other than the gearboxes and a few other bits they're generally good vans. I had one and I liked it a lot.

The main issue on the traggig gearbox is its oil delivery to the gear shafts! 1st 6th reverse are on the same shaft at the far end & due to its design its the last for lubrication i had a new 55 plate sl27 had 3 NEW gearboxes in it!! 15000mles 38000mls & 62000mls & they were all caused by not enough oil lubing the gears & the last gearbox at 62000 went all the way up to 169000miles with no probs i used a lucas or comma gear oil stabiliser that turns your gear oil into like a honey coating everything inside but i had gear oil changed on every oil change at 12000mles & never had a prob since, ive got a spair gearbox here for a laguna 1.9dci i believe its the same gearbox... i have to as a mate from renaut to make sure tho  :-\
