Omega General Help / Exhaust

I've been changing the exhaust on my 2.2 (did my old 2.6 MV6 - seemed much easier). I'm also in the process of replacing the front pipe and cat (I've read about sticking with genuine but I need car back on the road asap and I've retained the old one to perhaps drop round the Marks DTM to get it refurbed )
Anyway, took the heatshield off the manifold and was presented with the image below - this looks like a crack to me however there wasn't any 'soot' on the back of the heatshield.
I've noticed that the car doesn't seem to have much low end 'grunt', well less than expected but maybe I've been spoiled from my old S-Type. Is this a possible symptom or is it just that this is a characteristic of the 2.2 petrol? Was trying to go for Jame's Omega but wifey put her foot down even though I said she could have the equivalent spend in jewellery
