General Car Chat / Leather conditioner
« on: 12 November 2023, 11:11:11 »
I bought some Gliptone leather conditioner based one a few reviews including here that it has a wonderful leather smell.  I put it on my steering wheel.  However to me it smells very chemical, of mothballs even.  My car interior used to smell what I think of as leather - difficult to describe but a pleasant very slightly yeasty smell.  Does anyone know what conditioner has that smell?

The Gliptone does work very well it's just the smell I don't like.

Cars for Sale & wanted / Manual 2.6 Elite for sale
« on: 28 January 2023, 20:31:56 »
Sadly thanks to Mr Ulez the mayor of London I have to sell my mig.

I have no idea what it is worth, please do offer opinions. Can't be many manuals left.

2001 V6 2.6 petrol manual in the rare Star Silver :y.
I've owned it for 10.5 years.
129K miles.
Reg X949 SPU
Just got through it's MOT - https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=x949+spu
Usual advisories - discs pitted but not seriously weakened, springs corroded (they were corroded a year after I fitted them  in 2014 but no MOT tester complained until now :o)
Cam gaskets done at 120K with new spark plugs.
Cam belt changed by James at 82K.
No codes showing.
Always run on super unleaded and with fully syn oil since 2013 (API SN only - compatible with old seals).
Oil changes every 5K miles or less.
Converted to spin on filter in 2013 (best thing I ever did in terms of effort v benefit).
Hilper's boot mod.
Velour seats.
All the usual Elite stuff - cruise, bose sound with integrated phone, multi cd, air con, heated and fully electric seats and wing mirrors, memory for seats, wing mirrors and rear view mirror, 17" alloy wheels.

Everything working.

I also have some spares e.g. replacement electric rear blind, set of new FAI wishbones which have never been needed. Full set of original brochures.

I've only had 2 cars in 25 years, this one and a 1998 2.5 V6 omega I had from new.  I'll be very sad to see it go, the replacement merc cl is only part consolation :'(.

"Japanese carmaker Mazda has developed a more efficient petrol engine at a time when the industry steers toward electric vehicles.
It said the compression ignition engine was up to 30% more fuel-efficient than its current engines.
It plans to sell cars with the new engine from 2019."

General Discussion Area / firefox finally had enough
« on: 04 August 2017, 13:26:00 »
finally switched from firefox browser to chrome.  i tried to stay with it, despite the regular 'updates' which lost all my cuuustomisations  and despite them 'fixing' with the layout which wasn't broken.  final straw was script errors with firefox on ebay causing hangs. aded the 'no script' add on but at the cost of disabling all scripts on all pages which is a pain to  administer.  i did try my best to stick with it :(

General Car Chat / false SORN
« on: 02 August 2017, 23:57:45 »
well the car that has been dumped in our busy road has just become untaxed for the requisite 2 months and 2 days before DVLA will lift a finger.

but it has just become SORN >:(.  Even though it is on a public road and hasn't moved for 4 months!

is this someone working the system, knowing you can get away with 2 months and 2 days without tax and now moving on to a similar SORN scam?

anyone know the best way to progress this?

Omega General Help / fuel pump relay - is it on all the time?
« on: 24 June 2017, 13:43:51 »
i have a duff fuel pump relay.  temporarily can I just hot wire it and disconnect the hot wire when I switch off the ignition?  i.e. when working normally, does  the relay run all the time the ignition is on or does it switch on and off as the pump is required? thanks

i should add this is the passenger side one of the the two purple relays in the engine bay - variously described on OOF as fuel pump relay or injector relay (drivers side one being variously described as fuel pump relay or engine management relay.  is this diagram the correct version? http://oldsite.omegaowners.com//forum/YaBB.pl?num=1176542235

Omega General Help / changing fuel pump, towbar in the way
« on: 21 June 2017, 21:08:50 »
went to undo the 4 screws in the boot to get at the fuel pump and one screw is covered by the tow bar strengthener >:(.  that seems to be secured by at least 6 large bolts, 2 go through to welded on nuts so they're ok but the others are onto nuts obscured by the fuel tank.

has anyone come across this before?

i think my towbar was a factory fit, it is the removable type and this is an elite.  i'm tempted just to undo 3 screws on the fuel pump cover and bend it back. alternatively might be easier to hole cut the tow bar strenghtener above the screw.

Omega General Help / V6 just dies no pedal codes
« on: 28 May 2017, 17:28:35 »
after about 20 minutes happy driving the engine just stopped, i glided to a stop and re-started it, fine then 5 minutes later same again. And again.  No pedal trick codes or eml light either time.   will put my cheap scanner on it tomorrow but any ideas?  doesn't seem similar to the crank sensor that went 12,000 miles ago. cam sensor perhaps?  or oil in the plugs?  half tank of petrol.  car now done 102K.

General Discussion Area / any PSV licence holders here?
« on: 11 May 2017, 11:34:45 »
if a PSV driver gets an endorsement on his/her licence, does that (a) become a matter of public record and (b) make them lose their job?

General Discussion Area / best anti spam software
« on: 11 May 2017, 01:59:44 »

Omega General Help / manual 'leather' gearbox gaiter
« on: 13 April 2017, 08:20:53 »
did these change between pfl and fl?  i ordered a new one, very smart and real leather but it doesn't fit my fl which has a symmetric gaiter (all seams same length, pyramid shape) whereas the one i received has 2 seams significantly longer than the other 2.

here's a pic of what a new fl one should look like
