Thanks Taxi

Heres a question for you then  ;D why not simply do away with the helicoil and simply tap the hole a bit bigger? I suppose in the example of thecylinder head that'd be hard to then get the bigger stud to go through the manifold hole?

but  for applications like the sump plug in tiggers thread....just tap a bigger hole, bigger bolt, washer, done?

Eventually you run out of reinforced material suitable for tapping, but hypothetically speaking, that could work ;)

I've got a Sealey kit that has several different size taps that are slightly oversize the normal sump plug sizes, they come with matching oversize plugs

The one and only time I've had to use helicoils was on wife's 2.6. I was doing the rocker gaskets, for a change  ;D I found one of the cam carrier bolts was far too free and easy for my liking. I certainly didn't want to tap the hole bigger, so I bought a helicoil kit. I was robbed because I needed it there and then, but thems the breaks.

I have to say, it worked very well. Although Mrs Deviator was less than impressed as I dragged the vaccum outside to collect the swarf created  ???

In my case, the one thing I did (under advice) was to use two helicoils in the hole to make sure it had a good bite. As far as I am aware, it's still good today - well there are no strange noises.
