(Rover) Any idea on removing CV joints
« on: 27 September 2010, 16:05:24 »

I need to remove outer CV joints from driveshaft. I understand that there is some kind of circlip (that fits in a hidden groove) that you cannot get to that holds them in place.

Is it just a case of pulling it off?  I don't want to remove driveshaft from gearbox if at all possible.

The circlip you are thinking of is on the inboard spline  ie where the drive shaft pushes into the gearbox. You wont be able to see it until you pull the shaft from the gearbox. The outer end is just a big nut holding the hub on the splines, no circlip.   :y

I have "tapped them off with a hammer in the past. Some need quite a tap though.

I can see that the nut holds the hub to the splines of the CV, but it cant hold the CV to the drveshaft?

I'm guessing the clip is the same kind of spring clip holding the nearside driveshaft in on the MR2 .. 'quite a tap' is an understatement, in that case - more like belt seven bells out of it with a big hammer and a drift  :D

Any tips for stopping it coming out of gearbox whilst tapping beating the crap out of it?

The drive shaft is held in the gearbox with a circlip/spring ring and the outer joint is held on the shaft the same way. The nut just holds the shaft to the hub.
Sorry i wasn't a bit clearer in the first post  :y

mole grips or a g clamp to hold the shaft to the wishbone. hold the outer cv joint straight as you can with a slight pull and tap.

ps(if its just the cv gaiter thats knackered the stretch boots are pretty good)

Been a few years since i've done a rover joint but if they are the same as the GM FWD ones, remove the boot, clear out as much grease as possible then have a feel round inside the joint for the circlip.

Use a good set of external circlip pliers in one hand, copper or soft face hammer in the other hand and pull the joint with other hand.....

Did i memtion you need three hands ;D

pull the complete shaft out, hold it in a vice by the shaft and beat the CV off with a FBH.

its easier than trying to hold it on the car.

I'm not allowed tea until I'm bathed :(. Hence laying in the bath, on OOF :P

The old one went in a few times ;D.  It lasted remarkably well, but I think the water eventually killed it  :'(

This HP one has yet to fall in the bath, but has been left out in the rain more than once (last time being Newent ;D)

I've even known a guy who took his Blackberry in the shower..

But I hadn't known anyone who'd dropped a laptop in the bath until now  ;D

IIRC the outer CV joint came off the drive shafts quite easy with a bit of a tap and I don't remember the driveshaft being held in the gearbox either but it was a couple of years since I have done the CV joints on mine and my daughters 25s ::)

Had trouble getting the boot clips tight - driveshaft end I used a cable tie, but the large one, had to use clip. Not convinced its tight enough  :-/

Join two cable ties together if needs be... I try to use the metal clips though, cable tied ones have come loose for me in the past.
