Xenon in Right side does not "fire" in every start
« on: 12 October 2020, 17:37:13 »

Hello, help needed again. So, 2001, saloon with xenons and daylight automation. My xenon lights should always go on when I start the engine. Nowadays - now and then only the left side goes on, thus right one is missing. Due to this I changed both xenon bulbs a week ago. It did not help.

1. In case right one is missing when I then turn the lights on from the dash button and engine still sunning both bulbs work (I have tested just a couple of times).
2. In case right one is missing when I stop the engine and start it again without touching the button in dash both bulbs work (I have tested just a couple of times).

I changed the daylight automation relay perhaps 7 years ago as it was totally broken. So I know where it is and can test it if needed.

Now question is how to continue, does this daylight relay fire both together or "separately". Do this car have separate light relays in relay box? Or should I start to think about this "transformer unit" is it a right word. Please help.

Swap the ballasts and see if the fault moves :y

Ballasts? Are they the next unit I mean the box where this thick wire comes from? Good idea!

I might have misunderstood the OP, but diagnosis in the case of HIDs not striking are to:

Swap bulbs side to side (bulb fault most likely)
Swap ballast unit side to side
Check for 12v at the *input* side of ballast - with care, output side can produce enough to kill people.

Thanks for comments and sorry for bad explanation, when this problem started I bought new good quality Philips bulps to both sides, installed them immediately and it did not help, right side still lazy. So perhaps next step to swap ballasts now. I try to learn to measure the 12V side, too, and report back if still alive.

Your English is very good :y

Just looked at the wiring diagrams, and its only one 12v feed from the daytime running "relay", splitting into 2 just before the fuses F22 and F31.

So looking like ballast, or wiring has gone faulty.

Ballasts are probably shot.  Swap them from left to right to see if the problem swaps but they'll probably need replacing anyway.  I'm guessing they're expensive though?

I started this topic due to MOT in October. I did not do anything yet as I had good luck. Both sides were working when the 'engineer' started the car. Only corroded sills were the problem but fixed now. One year more to clarify this.
