Title: Santander - Again
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 21 January 2021, 09:49:13
More changes without any notifications.  Allthough they said they have sent notification via snail mail.

The sods have swapped the 3% cash back items to 1% and vice versa. :-\

So I had my TV licence  3 Mobile bills, 2 ISP bills (mine and someone elses) a total of just £123 a month @ 3% cash back. :-\

My Water bill that was 1% (£23 monthly) now earns 3% cash back. :-\

Plus I also found out the the 1.5% on the bank balance hasnt been for quite a while and is currenly 0.6% and is dropping to 0.3% in April. :-X

This has all been reported on financial sites such as MSE for ages. There is no money to be made from interest, cashback or switching incentives right now. There is talk, although I think it's highly unlikely, of negative interest rates, but that would probably not affect private bank accounts.

One consequence of negative interest rates is that banks might start charging for personal bank accounts.  :-\

We're just about the only country in Europe where banks don't charge a fee, and why shouldn't they?

I used to have the 123 account with them. Originally it paid 3% on balances above £3000, 2% over £2000 & 1% over £1000 That was when I had sod all in the bank, now I have more than £3000 they pay sod all in interest!  :-\

No reason at all, after all they charge for everything else, while at the same time are busy dismantling their branch networks.  ::)

They have excuses for it all.

Interest was paid upto £16K that has raised to £20K but where is the benefit for people who have savsed all thier lives, they are gaining nothing woth having for doing it.

Also if anyone was lucky to win Euromillions would they really let a bank look after it if the bank doesnt look after them.

But if you find a better proposition than 123, let me know, as I can't.  Especially as the local Casino is not deemed to be essential, thus closed.

They don't need excuses, all of the banks are offering the same amount of interest at the moment, virtually zero. People act as if banks are bothered about retail customers closing their accounts, they are not. For every dissatisfied customer that leaves, a dissatisfied customer of another bank will join.

I'll add to that, if you are in 'The Black' the Bank doesn't want you as a customer! Several tens-of-thousands of pounds in a current account doesn't make the Bank any money (of any significance).

Serves the bastards right though..... coining it in when there was misery for many.

Interest was paid upto £16K that has raised to £20K but where is the benefit for people who have saved all their lives, they are gaining nothing worth having for doing it.

Interest wise it's not a good time but you do get to choose your carers if you're unfortunate enough to need them later in life if you have decent savings. I had a similar conversation in Santander coincidentally, although the Bank is irrelevant, asking what the incentive was to save when I'd watched over 130K of my parents money go in care fees. Keep a certain amount back for holidays, emergencies etc. and spend the rest before it's taken from you.
Enjoy your money while you can, you've worked for it so why not.  :y  The thing that upsets me most is not that my parents money went in care, but that they didn't enjoy life to the full themselves. They saved so that I could inherit apparently. Well, that didn't pan out very well did it.  ;D  I don't need their money as I'm comfortable myself financially, but my parents purchased cheaper food items to save money. It's got to be an era thing, as they really didn't need to count the pennies.  :y
As was mentioned earlier, I also grew up paying a colossal interest rate on a mortgage but now I have money the rate is around 0.01%, unless I'm willing to have it tied up in investment accounts, which I'm not as I can't be arsed and it would only be more for my carers to take off me in later life.  :)

It's hard not to think that something bad may be around the corner, though. And logic says the more dosh you have saved, the more resilient you are.

It's bad enough at the moment! What did you have in mind? ;)

Personally, illness or loss of employment.

I too have found Santander (and all the other banks and building societies I have a few pennies in) have been good at posting me letters of changes, as well as emailing me.  I suspect it is a legal requirement they have to do.

So, as YZ says, if you're not getting these, its worth checking your details with them are up to date.

Don't mention Santander to me  >:(. I used to have an account with them years ago in Mallorca. I fell out with the so called manager so I dumped them. Never bank with you ever again I said  >:(. Forward a few years I opened an offshore bank account in IOM with I think NatWest with an interest of 8% per annum. Lovely! Forward another few years and guess who took over NW? bloody Santander! My current account earns 0.0%  :(. Thieving barstewards.  >:( >:(

I have an account with 'Ford money'.......this is due to end very shortly.

I managed 1.75% when I joined.

This account is no longer available to new customers.

If you don't need instant access to your savings, you could do worse than carefully selected mutual funds.

January last year my SIPP was £32k, March saw it drop to £25k (incidentally about what it started at when I started it in 2019) and currently sitting at £42k, and I haven't added a penny to it*. Which is nice 8)

*Obviously I need to address this sooner rather than later.
