Omega General Help / Is there only one Brake pad sensor on front ?
« on: 08 September 2016, 22:48:34 »
Hi all,

Popped a nice new set of front brake pads on my dad's Desmond (2.2 Y plate Petrol Auto FL Saloon !) today whilst he was in Hospital having an operation.  Calliper off, sliders checked and greased, calliper holders off and cleaned !, Piston checked, and pads and calliper/holder filed and copper creased in right places  :y

Pads not that worn but replaced anyhow, and discs in fine fettle, however I noticed that oddly he only had one brake pad wear sensor :o ? Fitted on passenger side  ??? But not one to be found on drivers and no sign of the plug where it should be ! ( As I removed BOTH of my sensors on my V6 MFL) so know where they should be  ( or at least where they are on the MFL  model  :D )

Did they only bother to fit one to the FL models ?  No obvious wiring butchery on his car but I could inspect closer tomorrow !  Got his rocker cover gasket to do if it's not pi55ing down tomorrow, which I am strangely looking forward to  ;D

Thanks in advance.

Andy.

Hi all,

I am doing Rocker cover gasket on my Fathers 2.2 petrol Facelift (noticed the other day slight weep from back RH corner, which then drips onto Bell housing and then onto where Dipstick stalk bolts on ?, and then drop on his drive  >:(

The maintenance guide looks good so I shall follow that, all bits ordered from Vauxhall  :y (£40 for gasket, o rings and sealant  :o)

However, just so I take the right tools, are the bolts to take Rocker cover off, and the Coil Pack, hex type ones or Torx/star ones ?

I have a set of hex bits for the socket set and Torque Wrench, but if its Torx  ones which one / flavour do I need ?

Any advice prior and post the Job ?

Thanks,
Andy.

Hi all,

Stretched the legs on my MFL V6 Mig and visited my Dad at weekend (Average 44mpg 60 mile motorway run :D).

When I got there, I gave is Omega some TLC and noticed his 2.2 - 4 cyl (Petrol Auto CD Face Lift Model) had a small bit oil towards back of rocker cover, gasket area, RHS.  Noticed a little drip on his drive and on the base of breather pipe on top of Bell housing I think.  Definite oil from gasket as oily finger when touched !

Looking at the Guide, looks like rocker cover on the 2.2 is very simple (Compared to my V6, or less bits to get out the way at least ! ).  I used a Genuine GM gasket (very expensive looking licorice !! and O rings when mine was done.

I assume probably wise to use GM one for the 2.2 as well ???  Any experiences and advice ?

Any particular flavour of sealing compound ?  Again assume GM stuff best to use ?  It mentions to use sealant on the areas to the side of the cam clamps which are at the pulley end of the cams ?

If I get chance I may do the job for my Dad to help him out, but just wanted any advice before I commit.

thanks in advance.

Andy.

Omega General Help / UPDATE - Front disc replacement.
« on: 26 March 2016, 22:11:07 »
Update.

Disks and and pads now changed  :y. Thanks to all for help  :)

The hot wheel was I believe a stiff piston on the calliper as it was hard to push back (sliders were all free, but I took out and greased and appeared like new  :y )

I have cleaned around the piston, and pushed seal back and cleaned outer of piston and it looked all clean, shiney and no corrosion. Worked piston back and forth about 20 times and it feels the same as the other side.  Not sure if this is prolonging the issue and that I need to replace  calliper ????  Can you get a piston service kit ?  Guess best to keep an eye on things and at slightest "warm wheel" replace calliper ?  Assume a pair of GM ones are not cheap  :'(

Also noticed that the new GM pads came pre chamfered on the ends  :y which was a nice surprise.

Omega General Help / Front Discs, any recommendations....
« on: 21 March 2016, 18:59:34 »
Hi All,

Looking to maybe put a new set of Front discs and pads on the old girl.  I noticed one front wheel slightly warmer than the other on short drive after I washed her today (couple of miles to dry brakes and discs off  :y).  I put new discs on a good few years ago, but she only does 1000 miles a year  :y so I would not expect them to be worn.

I noticed a bit of corrosion on the inside face of the both front discs, so thought would treat to new set of discs and pads regardless.  ;)

I have always used GM pads, but I wondered (other than GM) are there any other discs others have used with relative success :)

Thanks in advance.

Andy.

P.S>  Here is the old girl after a wash and wax.  Not bad for 16 years old  :y

Hi all.

Couple of things:

1/

Noticed boot lit not open all way by itself any more as have to 'Assist' it the last bit.  Car is MFL 2.5V5 CDX Saloon (Manual  :y).  Mechanism is clean and lubed as always  :y

I also noticed this on my dads (2.2 FL CD Saloon, Auto), and in fact its much worse on his as have to lift and hold the boot all the time.

Any recommendations for a new set of Hydraulic struts ?  :)

I just want to avoid any rubbish ones if anybody has any experience ?, or are they much the same ?

They are £20 a set on Amazon (Made in the UK by SGS Engineering, 2 year guarantee, Replaces part number(s): 90379054) and seem OK.

Assume my MFL and my dads FL are the same part ?

2/
My dads FL had a couple of broken boot lid wires recently (the ones on the LHS) causing boot release to stop (again !)  :o.  All soldered and wired back (again !)  :y but wondered if there is a better fix for this ? (other than not opening the boot ever again !!!!)

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

My Father's 2.2 Auto Petrol (face lift Y plate) I believe as a goosed alternator.  I read somewhere you can get a new Diode pack ?

Story is :

  • on driving to hospital he experienced a Christmas tree of lights come on the dash
  • autobox appeared to stay in 3rd but managed to get there and back
  • next morning battery was flat and had to use manual key to gain entry as locks not responding to fob
  • charged battery for few hours to get some life and Left overnight, but following morning battery volts had plummeted
  • battery is 4years old

His mechanic is coming tomorrow to look but I assume if alternator diodes faulty then they could short battery this causing the drain overnight ?  Or there is a issue with one of the electrical circuits on the car.

He has got a new battery to put on it now, but I was wondering if the Diode pack can be replaced (if its that) and how much one would expect pack to be - cheaper than an alternator I assume  :y

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

A mate of mine is wanting to get his Audi S8 Checked out (Chewing front tyres, again  :o)

Does anybody know of any decent 4 Wheel Geometry set up garages Chester/Liverpool way ?

I have used Nigel Langs in Bolton with great success (and have recommended them to him) but he was looking for something closer than a tank of fuel away in an S8  ;D

TIA.

Appologies in advance as this link will mean you will loose 1 hour of your life looking at cars you had  ;D

Its that time of year again  :o MOT  :o

Freshly washed / waxed and various bits fettled with wipe with an oily rag  :y

No advisories last time so fingers crossed.  Spotted a failed Side front side light so that's fixed  :y

Gonna need new exhaust soon, rear join to back box pipes between central and rear is a bit corroded, but not blowing so guess OK.  Its on its 2nd GM Exhaust in its lifetime  :y  Guess the next one is the bay of flea ETS Clamshell one (seems to be to be the one of choice  :) - May go for twin rear pipes.  Assume the 3.0ltr twin tail pipe back box fits no problem to the 2.5 single tail pipe one - both appear to have the same twin entry from the 2 x central sections)

Hi all,

Looking to put a new Bosch Battery on the old girl later (original 15 Year old GM was a bit empty yesterday  :'()

Reading Haynes, they say disconnect the Negative WITHIN 15 Seconds.

I assume this is correct and is all I need to worry about.

No need to reset anything (other than radio code which I have) when the new one is connected all up.

I have sprayed bolt and clamp holding battery in for last day or so as never been touched since came off production line !!! :y

What can go wrong !

60
Noticed the front lip of the external black door trim, the one in the rear door has rubbed with the drivers door when opened back door and its lifted the front corner of the strip.   >:(

I had a new strip fitted a few years ago, but I guess you can't get the MFL black ones now ??? (With the chrome strip).

How does the strip come off ?  As gentle heat I think should bend it back, but difficult to get back in with.  I recall somebody mentioning that the whole strip slides a fraction before pulling off ?????

Any advice welcome.

Andy.
