I probably would own one, if I lived somewhere which got frequent snow.  They are genuinely superb.  ;D

4WD vs having the right tyres for the conditions? No contest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc0x4sQkxxM

I've got a spare set of rims with proper winter tyres on them. The racing slicks come off in November and go back on in May. Also got a set of snow chains in the boot.

You do know that Panda is 4WD too?

Yes. But in general 4WD+Winters > 2WD+Winters > 4WD+Summers > 2WD+Summers. 4WD is not the panacea that many believe it to be. And the tyres fitted to most Land/Range rovers now are not proper Winters - they're usually cross climate at best.

Summer tyres don't work well below 6 or 7 degrees C. And on Ice/Snow they don't work at all well.

Yes, I found this out yesterday. Coming up a T junction on the brow of a hill. The bastard in front of me stopped dead and checked both ways, leaving me struggling to get traction behind him.

Just checking  ;D

That Panda in the YouTube vid is running studded tyres, which are another level of 'help' over winter tyres...... not that they are commonplace (for obvious reasons) in the UK.

Cancel snow, insert horrible, brown slush with deep pools of water. Yuk.

Took the Bimmer out in the snow today, 3-4" maybe, plus the usual compacted icey slush. It coped perfectly fine with even fairly steep inclines and even helped the neighbor get his 2wd Merc off his drive.

At least now I know I don't need to bother with a set of winters. I suspect ground clearance will be the limiting factor with this particular motor.
