Space in ashtray slot...
« on: 26 July 2021, 16:08:21 »

Another question regarding my planned plod resto.

If i wanted to fit a DIN sized unit radio instead of the ashtray would it fit? I have a spare ashtray cover that I'm quite happy to bugger about cutting, just wondering how much space there is behind. Don't mind cutting edge out the ashtray mechanism, I literally never use the cig lighter and Im not precious about my spare trim bits.

You might get one of the new fangled mechless units to fit but it's a ridiculously stupid place to fit it ;D

An alternative would be to either fit a telematics glovebox or butcher the existing and fit a single din cage in the glovebox. An adapter loom will easily reach and with a suitable box, you might retain the wheel controls. This also means you can retain the 'plodness' whilst discretely adding some creature comforts ;)

I have also fitted a Bluetooth headunit along with cd changer control in the glovebox, in my case running the audio though the cdc side of a factory 2015 Bose unit.

You should know by now my ridiculous stupidity knows no bounds...!

Cheers DG I'll have a think. The car is still away so I'm only idly musing.

Why don't you remove the ashtray, that is in your omega on the drive. You will know what space you have. ;D

This all sounds like my kind of fun. ;)

There's very little room in that location
