A strange query....
« on: 21 February 2007, 01:26:20 »

Apologies to all for the late posting of this, however I've been up late,
having been on call this morning, and called out.

My query is, why are we strangely drawn to this particular vehicle, despite all its faults.

It's biggest being its manufacturers sponsored repair centres.

For myself, I can only say that I just like the look of it.  Its elegance.   Combine that with the chassis,
and the drive however I must say I thought the Carlton chassis was better.

I've read articles on how it looks old in comparison amongst its alleged peers, but I think most current cars
just look misshapen and ugly.

What are BMW about with all that bulbousness and completely over designed headlamps
that look crap from every angle.

Maybe I'm just getting old.   Next stop SAAB or Volvo...    God forgive....

for me the main attraction is the comfort as I have a prolapsed disc, the facelift omega is the only car I've driven for more than 3 hours at a time without getting any aching.

Couple that with all the toys on the elite, the grunt from the 3 litre V6 (shame there's no turbo petrol option) and the way it drives makes up for the hassle of looking after it (well most of the time !!) ... good enough for me to want to replace my current one with an estate anyway ...

I love the Omega because if you get one thats been looked after and you continue to look after it they are bomb proof OK they have their inherent niggles but dont most cars, and value for money, you get more toys than an Ann Summers shop for peanuts, they handle well, they go well, and to me they look good too but last but not least what other car has a site like this :D nuff said ;)

I buy them because I like spending endless hours fixing them, then enjoying the profits....

Volvo? Nothing wrong with Volvo - as long as you get a T5. Saab? Don't talk to Laidback about SAAB. On the other hand, do. Ask him how his Carlsson is....  ;D I think he m,ay have a HEAD ache. That car was HEADing for trouble. Used more water in the end than Derby swiming pool.

Naaah. The Omega is a nice car to drive, but only in v6 mode. Ideal? 3.0 Elite Estate in Velvet green. Ideally with cream, leather and around a 1996 model. You want one that has done a few miles so everything is worn in, so maybe about 130k? Then, you want all the timing belt crap done too and maybe an MOT. Soem tax would be nice. Yes, that would be a great car if only you could find one like that...

Laidback -I tried mate. I tried!

No Pete. I think you will find that Anne Summers do not sell peanuts. Edible condoms maybe, leather frying pans, studded car mats, musk scented flags and shaking sausages. Peanuts, no.

You have obviously been p*ssed everytime you have been in there.  ;D

Almost all make and models of cars have owners clubs, I think it's a man thing to like the car you have...

But this is not a simple case of 'when I am not near the fish I love, I love the fish I'm near'....

In my opinion what is unique about the Omega in comparison to other cars is the club members... both here and before that on the other side.

Yes, Onega owners are different… If I do attribute this to the car, there is something about it that attracts us lot to it… perhaps being a solid, non-nonsense, down-to-earth, reasonably-priced, non-showoff, well-engineered machine, makes us feel comfortable with it in a way that no BMW or Audi owners ever will…?

I would love to see who are the members of the Prious Owners club…  ;D

Not to mention that when you see one on the road you wonder what stupid piece of driving you are about to witness, and they rarely disappoint. So when I was after a nice rear-drive saloon BMW's were out.

Yep. Emphasis on the non-showoff. I don't care what anyone thinks when they look at my car. As long as it's a good car from my POV that's fine. Others buy a car solely for what other people think when they see them driving it. Not for me.

Yeah, how up their own @rse do you reckon they'd be? Battery changing parties with carrot juice and nut roast laid on!

The other issue is that I can't name a (middle of the road) modern car I'd want, even if I were prepared to buy new and suffer the depreciation. They've all gone FWD, which isn't my cup of tea in a powerful car, they're all styled like a Ford Focus - again not my cup of tea, and there's very little to choose between them.

The Omega marks the end of an era of comfortable RWD saloons that aren't vulgar fashion accessories and that's why (remembering the 1992 Senator 24v my dad used to own) I wanted one before they're all gone.

leather frying pans,
(Casts mind back to yesterday's pancake making session) I think I'll "stick to" Teflon coated steel if it's all the same ;-)

..and being a weekend gypsy it's the only RWD car heavy enough to pull my aircraft carrier. Alternatives would be a cheap 4x4(2x0 until it's too late).
