Everyones nightmare....
« on: 27 February 2007, 23:16:39 »

Is RUST. So what does everybody think of rustproofing centers and rustproofing in general?
i'm sure some of you might have some experience on this subject. Is it worth doing? I was thinking to rustproof my ALFA(please no jokes about ITALIANS and rust ;D) but one of the rust proofing centers i had a chat with and after i asked them how they dry the car after they wash it underneith, they told me that the Waxoyl thingy doesn#t need a completely dry surface when you apply it. This made me worry a bit as i alwaysknew that you don't wantto trap moisture on metal surfaces. What are your views and opinions?
Thanks in advance

I'd want it dry first, but as it's an Alfa maybe he thought it didn't matter ;D

Edit.  Sorry Kostas  :-[

I have never used Waxoyl but others I know have.

They got a local paint spraying company to get the car into the spray oven to warm it up like a good 'un before filling every available cavity with warm waxoyl.

Owners were happy with the outcome, but didn't keep the cars for long enough to chop up and see if it worked....

Warming the Waxoyl is far easier than the whole car surely! (and recommended).

Great stuff, but I would definatley make sure everything was dry, otherwise the waxoyl will just displace the water, maybe into somewhere the waxoyl is too thick to get into.

When I had my Range Rover I enquired about rust proofing and everyone i spoke to said this company was good http://www.before-n-after.co.uk. I also think the jaguar club also recommend them as well :y

They put in large adverts in the Landrover magazines too. The results look very good using Kleentect. £400 - 500 is a lot of money to spend though.

The good thing about Waxoyl is that you can do it yourself on your drive for just the cost of the materials and a basic sprayer (the pump one is good). If you use a cheap compressor and spray gun (not the paint sprayers), you get excellent results. The "nail sprayer" which is simply a tube with a nail in it to direct the wayoyl in all directions is great for getting into voids, doors and cavities etc. Of course you can buy the aerosols as well.

Apart from fact that Wayoyl is a nasty smelly substance before you apply it and it's dried out, I think its fantastic and does it's job well.

A colleague of mine used to have a Fiat Strada 130TC. Every time it had been a hot day you'd see 4 big puddles of waxoyl under it in the car park where it had dripped out of the sill drain holes. Don't blame him, I suppose.

I have the waxoyl pump / sprayer complete with pipe with nail in if anyone fancies a go. Best to wait until summer IMO.

Thanks for you replies so far guys. I think i might do a rustproofing excersice in summer myself during a hot day.
The only thing that puts me off is that i don't really like this black type of underseal. I'm more keen on the semi transparent yellow/brown type of wax that car manufacturers use. I think i would rather do it myslef and with the money buy some tools(air compressor etc).

I did the inside of my doors at the end of last summer with waxoil.

Dripped out for days afterwards, but eventually stopped.

But then, I did thin it down so that it would get into all the crevices ;)

Last time I bought Waxoyl you could get either the thin clear stuff for interior areas and the black thicker stuff for underneath.

Original Post was requesting a way to ensure car was dry, not warm, before spraying to ensure moisture not trapped in.

Or thats the way I interpreted it anyway...

Just a thought, you don't think it may have damaged some wiring in drivers door, causing your sensor problem?

Hotel 21, I assumed that the garage you were on about had warmed the car up to ensure the Waxoyl flowed into all the little gaps.

Thinking about it, the oven would dry it out, but seems like alot of hassle. A DIY version would be to leave the car in the garage with a fan heater on!  [smiley=smiley.gif]

Thats a good idea acually!!
To be honest with you i'm planning to get a radiator (the ones that are filled with oil) and put it in the garage with a timer so that it keeps the car always warm and moisture free!
