That's a fault with the gearbox rather than the owner. CVTs are universally awful. I used to find it odd that Ford bothered with the ordinary Fiesta/Focus as well as the Fusion variants. The success of their current mix of taller crossovers/SUVs/other ghastly names shows they were simply hedging their bets.
If I had to replace the Focus - which is technically my mother's car - to move them around, I'd be looking at a Meriva or similar tall car with sliding or rear hinged rear doors simply for access reasons. Hell, a car that doesn't require climbing up out of the seats has significant appeal to
