Email the seller, see what he wants. I'd offer him another £10 on top of your bid.
He won't get more for it (at least not off any sane person!).

If he expects to get much more he will be seriously disappointed.

Senator has hydraulic self adjusting shims, so top end noise will be timing chain rattle or a terminal lack of oil supply.

That many dash lights does not bode well for the way the car has been "serviced" (I use that word in the loosest possible sense!).

Rear arches are  :-Xed!! You don't just replace them... if only it was that simple!

Lost the V5 and the MOT? Well done that man! Still I don't really think this is a stolen car!  ;D

one of my other cars is a carlton, and there is a thriving market for spares and car restoration. I also belong to
www.totalcarlton.co.uk a thriving club for the resoration of said models including the GSI and diplomat.

Tunnie. Hydraulic self adjusting shims are simply the metal plates that are used to adjust the gap between the cams and the valves.

Hence tappety sound on a Senator = bad!

Older cars had tappets which needed manual adjustment periodically to do the same job. When the gap became too large you would get an engine sounding very rattly (old Talbot engines though sounded like this pretty much all the damn time!)

For a more technical (and better written) description, please await Marks post! ;)

The hydraulic lifters are a bit more than a shim, more like a short hyraulic pushrod.
See here for pictures of them.

Some people miss diagnose a tappety top end. Basically, there's an awful lot of injector noise from C30SE's. (I know you've noticed this!). Some people think it's the cams/followers.

If it is actually noisy 'tappets', then there's a good chance there's low oil pressure for some reason. That is most probably caused by clogged oil ways due to bad servicing or more likely, as in most Vx's, a clogged oil strainer in the sump. The strainer can be cleaned, but hope there's no terminal damage done.

The followers sometimes fail but can go on for ever if you can cope with the annoyance over what should be a silky smooth mill, but as I said before, might be a sign of something more major.

Any way it's probably best to avoid bad noises 'cos they ain't chep to fix.*

*Second hand engines however are as cheap as chips at the moment, but don't expect that to last much longer!
