Car Insurance - Recommendations?
« on: 01 May 2024, 07:55:10 »

Who/where/what insurance providers do people use?

I haven't needed to buy insurance in the UK for a few years so completely out of touch with which ones are good / expensive / useless etc.

Comparison sites best to start with, what works well for some not so for others. I have the wife's policy with Hastings and mine is with Tesco. Both gave the best price for the car being quoted.

Costs vary wildly, so what works for me likely won't work for you.

As the Student says, start with the comparison sites, but also do a quickie check on those that don't appear on comprison sites as well, such as Direct Line.

Give the meerkats a go and get what works for you. They're largely as shite and expensive as each other.

Unfortunately that probably means your previous NCB (no claims bonus) may NOT be accepted by UK insurers  :(
Most only allow 1 or 2 years gap

Thanks all - that gives me some pointers.

On the NCD - I had 30 years claims free........

I have just renewed my insurance in NZ - will have to offer the renewal letter and see if that gains me anything.

I've lived abroad for more than 2 years a couple of times, and a call to the insurers when I got back to explain the circumstances sorted the NCB quickly and without hassle both times.  :y

Indeed, my "2nd" car insurance often has lapses of 2 or 3 years, always seems hassle free to get the full NCD reinstated if you have the renewal letters still.
