xbox suround set up question
« on: 16 February 2012, 14:03:42 »

OK, bare with me i have a massive hangover!
I think Ive confused myself already.
Ive always had ps3 with hdmi to tv, optical out to suround sound.  but couldnt work out how to get the xbox to play through suround sound without buyin that extra cable, so i just plugged the optical cable from ps3 into the tv, so now its optical from tv to suround, hdmi from each console.
so its playing through fine, but does that mean it wont be 5.1 sound from consoles?  :o ::) ???

Just plug the optical cable "from" the ps3 out into the Xbox so it's "from" the Xbox out.
No?

Depends on whether your TV can do 5.1 passthrough or not.
Does your surround system not tell you what mode it is running in?

I dont have a optical out on my eggsbox, you need an extra cable for that.  do hdmi cables just send stereo or 2.1?

suround says its in 2.1, tv can do 5.1 i think

HDMI is capable of carrying 7.1 and more, what actually gets sent down the line depends on how you have the equipment configured.

Pretty much any television will take a 5.1 signal through the HDMI port where it is then downsampled to 2 channel stereo for playing back through the TV speaker, however not many TV's can pass the 5.1 signal through to the optical output (which sounds like the case here if your surround system is reporting 2.1 playback).

Your tv is not capable by the sound of it.
So, you need another optical cable to run to your home cinema. Or use the cable you have for ps3 temporarily.
Xbox does have optical out. Older models have it on the large grey video out plug iirc.

The optical out is just to the left of the HDMI port when viewed from the rear
