Might be worth checking the oil pressure before taking it apart again?

Could be that the pressure is low.

Also, I remember ClarCE saying his lifters were noisy after we changed the cams and it didn't clear in just a short drive. It was purring like a kitten when I saw it a week later though.

Well, it ended up running down my arm, and it was a little warm. In flinching I hit my elbow on the exhaust downpipe, which was somewhat warmer  :o

Mental note to let it all cool down a bit more next time.

Well, garage tidied up and oil change achieved without incident. Old filter was well manky, causing me to wonder if they bothered last time, but the housing came apart no problems.

I cerainly wouldn't have wanted to run it another 14,000 on that oil  :o

I'm supposed to be attempting my first MV6 oil change today but it's p**ing down and It's a struggle getting SWMBO's MX-5 into the garage let alone the Omega, such is the level of junk. Was going to cut the 8" tall grass too ;D. Guess I'll start by clearing the garage out. Or slump in front of the PC all day as usual ::)

Not sure. I guess it's a Germanic thing, recycling the the metal can when you do a service.

Last time I saw a paper filter it was on a vintage tractor. Having done my first oil change today I must say I don't dislike it. But then mine came off easily...

Watched a few episodes of Lost and didn't get it. I'm with you on 24. However, I can't watch it on TV. I have to wait until the DVDs come out, perch myself on the sofa, surrounded by beer , junk food, pizza delivery menus, etc. and do the whole series in one hit.  :y

Ahh, Avenger Tiger.  :-*

A mate of mine had one of them when I was younger. He replaced the Stromberg carbs with twin 40 Dellortos and boy did it bark! Lovely set of wheels. Not seen one of them for a while...

It's a bit of a shame they've been starting that given that it's not been driven. I bet the engine internals aren't in such good shape. Would have been best to mothball the engine completely.

I know someone who used to work in another store chain not unrelated to these guys.

They were told by the management to put customer returns straight back on the shelf to be sold to the next mug who walked in.

It'd be worth checking your breathers are clear if you haven't done so recently. It could just be the first signs that the engine isn't breathing as well as it should, although mayo does seem to form on cars that have been used for short trips regardless.

Vehicle licensing is a total nightmare. The horror stories I have heard are unbelieveable.

The only way to do it is to turn up, in person, with all documentation completed, wait in the queue of shady car dealers and refuse to leave the counter until you're sorted. Take some sandwiches if it's before lunch time.

To make matters worse, each VRO seems to make up their own rules so what works in one town won't work in another. Sometimes it'a just a paperwork exercise, sometimes they need to see the car. Sometimes they need to inspect the car but the inspector bloke is on holiday so it's hard luck for 3 weeks. If they need to see the car they'll tell you you can't drive it to them because it's not registered. You then get the car to them at vast expense and they say "yep, that's certainly a car", stamp some paperwork and job done.  >:(

Don't bother trying to phone them. All phone lines lead to a clueless bint in Swansea who'll tell you that VROs "aren't equipped to receive calls" what? no phones? Still on smoke signals, are we? Or have you been upgraded to semaphore already?

Arrrrgghh!

Good luck..

I nearly bought one once as an emergency run about

About the last thing I'd want to be relying on in an emergency  ;D

Then again, it never failed to actually run, just with all the refinement of a horse and cart.

My housemate at the time had a Fiesta 1300S, and the AA man got into the habit of droping in on his way to work for a cup of tea and to jump start it!

I think your columns got confused there! But I get the picture!

If not, I'd like to try a Marina with a 2.0 Pinto and good handling please ;D

Directly descended from the Morris Minor

Yep. With a load more weight on the suspension and a load more torque through the transmission!
Changing the front trunnions was at least an annual job  >:(

My worst car was a Morris Ital 1.7 Estate.  ::)

Actually, I say that, but it was a hand-me-down from my Grandad who used to fettle with it constantly (excuse to get away from SWMBO no doubt!) so it was mechanically perfect. It was also free which was nice as I was a student at the time. It did a great job of carrying all my rubbish around. Just pile it all in the back, bicycles and all, and shut the tailgate. A similar technique was used on the rare occasions when I was sober at the end of a Friday night and my mates needed a lift home.

However, no attempt whatsoever had been made during production to protect it from rust so it was a constant battle to stop it rotting away. It suffered exactly the problems that Mark mentioned with the British car industry. New model? Right, let's go and have a look in the parts bin, then. When I look at other 1980's cars from the like of VW, even Ford,  I can't imagine why it ever sold at all. Maybe it was brand loyalty or maybe they were ridiculously cheap.

The O series engine was remarkably good IMO. It burned a little oil, but then it always had since new. It was reasonably nippy and fairly refined. I pity the poor soles who bought one with a 1275 A series in though. Gearbox was dire. Only 4 speed and 3 of them whined so badly you tried to stay in 4th. Again, like that since new, back to dealer, TADTS.

Handling was the worst aspect, though. Suspension straight from the Marina. I can't express in words how bad it was <shudder>.

Still, it did me for a good 5 years and was the ripe ond age of 14 when I sold it. Actually my Mum sold it for me when I was on holiday, which impressed me.
