Well, arrived at Blue_dreams place on Saturday AM.

He decided to get some used heads from a breakers, instead of rebuilding the old ones - which was fine with me, as it saved a fair bit of work.

I arrived, and he'd thoughtfully cleaned them up spotlessly clean, and the block, before my arrival - which is a good time saver.

I fitted the exhaust manifold and gasket to one of the heads, and we come across a broken, rounded spark plug, pretty much welded into the head  Tried all manner of things, but couldn't get it out with tools available. Got an "irwin" socket to hold well on there - heated it right up - and it still broke 2 extension bars! 

Eventually gave up on that idea, I decided it would be as quick to take out the valves from the "new" head, and fit to the old one. so that's what we did - which involved getting a spring compressor, as I didn't take mine.

Anyhow - head build - and they are both now fitted to the car.

Have also fitted the cams, the (correct) shells, cambelt kit, etc.

Compression test is now showing as healthy on all pots 

Need to hookup the ancils etc, hopefully next weekend or the one after, and hopefully the old girl will be saved from the graveyard

Sounds like a plan, sure gadget hands could here could be of some use, could be a LPG fitting party, think TB has been mulling it for ages too. Get the BBQ out, some bacon butties on.

My contract is up for renew in 6 weeks, they have to take the decision now to extend it, or offer me perm. If i go perm, fuel no longer counts against my tax, so will need to reduce my fuel bill. Petrol is 110p now, with LPG 57p, kinda makes me think about it every time i drive past

After chatting with Kevin, we came to the conclusion the kit is as good if not better than middle market systems.

I think James remembers the OMVL injector failure, I can vouch for Romano injectors not liking high gas pressures, but they are quiet and pretty reliable.

Yep. 

20K miles on mine now without being touched. Apart from the occasional bog down when changing up at 6K it's fantastic. If I were to do it again it would be the same kit again.

Ie 2.6 and 3.2?

Although thinking about it, i'm not sure i want to get rid of the problem as it makes me back off the power at the top of the rev range. Its about saving money after all. But on the other hand its a bit annoying when some blonde bird in a mini cooper 's' clears off before i can change to petrol.

Nope... Mine's the same. I have it switch back to petrol at about 5200RPM to overcome it

AFAIK it doesn't affect the 2.5's

But it all works so well other than that and TBH it's not often (in an Auto) that it revs that high it doesn't really matter

TB was talking to Kevin and I at Newent about converting his, but I wouldn't really think converting more than 2 at a time would be very practical... There's a lot to do

I tend to agree. :-/

However, if we could get enough people to work productively on a couple of cars at a time (I suggest 2 or 3 per car), along with enough tools and enough space to work on a couple of cars in parallel without treading on each other's toes, it does mean that one or more of us "experts " could juggle a "supervisory role" on a couple of conversions in parallel rather than taking a weekend for each conversion.

It's a tall order to achieve the above, though. I certainly don't have the space, especially this time of year when working outside is not (IMHO) feasible.

It's also a pretty solid weekend's work to convert a car so too many distractions like barbecues (unless Mr. Dent can be persuaded to man them)  might limit what we can achieve.

I'd be more than happy to come along to anyone's conversion to lend a hand and cast an eye but, as Kevin said, 2-3 people is really the most who can work on any conversion at one time... One at the front, one at the back and one underneath/inside

We can talk about the suitability of the area we are using for the meet this weekend on saturday if you like.  I have access to it whenever I want and we can leave cars there overnight and even over weekends if needs be.  It's just the power problem that needs to be overcome

Generators could solve that, with a large group should not be too expensive.

That would be great. I have a generator that will do our needs nicely, so if there's the space to work on a couple of cars that certainly solves the main issue IMHO.
